(7,892 posts)When I had a knee flare up with arthritis several years ago, my PCP sent me to a sports injury senter - the same one actually which is on call for the Olympic Training Center. The PA I saw told me yes, it was arthritis, my knee was "bone on bone," and that I should ice it daily for as long as necessary (usually 2-4 weeks.), never apply heat, and that if it persisted or came back there were two more invasive (injectible) possibilties - cortisone or hyaluronic acid. Of the two, hyaluronic acid is the one which more resembled actual cartilage. I knew about cortisone (and about its side effects.) Hyaluronic acid was new to me. So i paid attention, I have not yet needed to know about it, but I have become a little bit of a missionary for it.
