(121,102 posts)because it was dark and creepy and had one of those old-style furnaces that had arms that looked like an octopus. That thing scared the bejeebers out of me and I absolutely refused to go into the basement. We lived there when I was between 4 and about 6.

(36,861 posts)We lived in a two story duplex with the only bathroom in the basement. We lived there until I finished 8th grade. from the time I was born.

(11,780 posts)There was a big old furnace with ducts going out in different directions. It was a coal fired furnace and had to be stoked by hand so I had to take my turns going down and stoking it. I guess because I had to go down there often it wasnt as scary as the attic. I think about that now and how inefficient it was and how there was no insulation in the walls. Winters were rough there but my mom discovered electric blankets so at least once we were in bed it wasnt too bad.

(6,687 posts)I was okay with that, but it was kinda dark. I listened to scary shows on the radio - The Shadow, and the Green Hornet, oh, and the re- broadcast of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds. So I kinda scared myself.

(754 posts)Strange thing is: once I got to the attic I was fine. But until we moved out when I was 18, just going by that door gave me the willies.

(11,780 posts)I think it might have had a single bulb light by the door or maybe none at all because it was dark and scary there. I hated walking past that door and had nightmares about something coming out and getting me. It was a big old house and there was only one bathroom downstairs so Id hold it all night rather than going by there in the dark.

It really wasn't a bathroom --but a toliet in the center and a tub by the furnace. We would brush our teeth and wash faces in a plastic dish tub upstairs.

(36,861 posts)book came out when I was an adult. So I had no idea that other kids feared under the bed.

(34,382 posts)I always wanted my bed in a certain place so I could actually jump from the door and land my whole body where the boogies could not get me.
That is gone now but I do get a tingly feeling if a foot or hand hangs over the side. 70 years old and I have to make the safe adjustment before I can sleep. LOL

(7,475 posts)in my bedroom. Was someone lurking in there before bed? I never checked during the day. Nighttime is still a little scary. 😱 Its so dark. Maybe I read too many Nancy Drew books.

(367 posts)I had a recurring dream that dead people were under there and would try to pull me under. I think that was probably the result of being taken to a funeral or visitation and viewing the body at way too young and age!

(70,123 posts)It was a true cellar. Dark, damp, dirt floor, no lights. When I was a little kid, I went down there once with my uncle, to get pickles.
That was enough. Just the once.

(6,274 posts)cellar like that and it was so creepy. The trapdoor to get into it was in my parent's room. When I was about 12 they had the house raised and put in a full basement.

(36,861 posts)One day I went to get the mail and say a snake in the middle of the road. It stood straight up and these flippers came out from the sides of his head. I couldn't move. I had never seen anything like it before. My neighbor came out with a trash can and threw it at the snake. It wonder into a another person's yard. For awhile I was afraid to get the mail. I hope it died. I was an adult at the time.

(3,895 posts)I shot straight out of the bed and into the hall. I crouched down so I could see under the bed, and I thought I saw something vaguely human shaped lying under there. I eventually determined it was just some clothes. I stayed out there for a long long time, until exhaustion forced me back into bed. I told myself that this thing - whatever it was - was just cold and wanted a blanket. I subsequently convinced myself it went from house to house, spending one night at a time under the bed of a child that lived there, and that since it'd just been in my house it would be a long time before it got back to me.
As I got older I came to realize that I must've dreamed it. But I'm 59 now and I can still see that hand as vividly as I thought I did all those years ago.

(34,893 posts)It was inside a little enclosure; you had to open up a door to get at it. My mother often gave me the dinner garbage to take down there. I had to open up the lid and drop the bag of garbage inside. There were flames inside and I was scared to death of encountering a spider. No light until you fumbled around and found the pull chain hanging from the ceiling attached to a bare bulb. I would run down there, open the door, open the lid to the incinerator, drop the garbage in, and run back up the stairs like a bat out of hell.
Very scary experience for me!

(546 posts)When I was four to six, I was terrified by two scary-looking trees. They were so much bigger than the others.
But, it wasn't personal. In my mind, they came to life at night smashing the entire neighborhood.
