Nevertheless, it is the only state-wide paper. There is no other source doing local investigative reporting. There is no other source of local news. It's not half a loaf. It's barely the heel of a loaf but it's better than no local news at all.

A budget is a moral plan. We pay for what we value. I support businesses that share my views on democracy. (Nobody really needs that much Pinzeys spices.) I donate to politicians who will protect the Constitution and individual rights.

I value a free press and local news and will spend my money consistent with my values.

That does not cover local news themselves other than FSU football. Even before Knight-Ridder bought them out, they got their state government news from news services rather than send their own reporters down the street to cover it. Once Gannett bought the paper, it didn't improve.

While I was in college, I delivered papers for them. Then my husband worked for them for a while. Since then, we have not gotten the paper once - their employment practices are shit and the paper isn't worth lining a rat's cage with.

3. I live within the Treaty Land of the local tribe, so I get a Tribal Library card.

Good at all libraries in my county. Love to look at local historical documents for this area. Plus all the magazines that would cost a fortune to subscribe to. All free.

6. Lots of benefits.

On my side of our street, we have the tribal award winning fire department, they even have large water tanker trucks. Just across the street is the township volunteer department that takes forever. Protected by the tribal police and I guess they are Federal Officers. I support and respect them. Not all of the locals do. They have a great cultural museum near by too. I ever donated an artifact I found that they excepted and thanked me.

Our local paper, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, thinks it’s the monolith it used to be. I found an article I really wanted to be the other day - paywall - so I ran it through the archive. Nope. They demand payment. No free 2-3 articles a month like actual newspapers.

I used to have a subscription. Their “from Wire reports” were upside down. Opinion first. The lead paragraph was second to last.
