Always clean your tools when you are done with them and put them back where they belong so they’ll be ready the next time you need them.

He also told me when I got my drivers license, “if you get in trouble with the law you better hope they keep you.” I didn’t.

She also said don’t cross your eyes they’ll get stuck in that position. I tried but it didn’t work.

In any situation, that has proven to be good advice. Sounds obvious, but isn't. I see people going back trying to get something that isn't available all the time and really want to quote my mom, but she also taught me, "Don't give advice until you're asked for it." That was tough when I had teenagers in the house! (And btw, she didn't follow that one too well when I was the wild one.)

In romantic relationships: "If it's right, it's right. If it's not right? It's not right." So simple, but timeless.

That piece of advice prevented me from becoming a fly-off-the-handle, hair-trigger-temper jerk.

For decades, it was popular to believe that not expressing your anger and “getting it all out” meant that all that anger was building up inside you, and soon you would explode at the least provocation.

We now know that “bottling it all up” is a myth. Staying calm, being slow to anger, and measuring the need for an anger response is healthy, while ranting and raving all the time about everything is physically unhealthy, and will probably mark you out as a poorly socialized jerk.

Thanks for the good advice, Mom.

I cannot think of a single thing mine said that was of any value. Everything she said was fear-based. Not a great way to be raised.

But I did learn the part about always cleaning your tools and putting them back where they belong. My dad was a mechanic. Definitely learned that one. And to this day, I still do it.

As far as social issues, she was WAY off. (Southern belles are not known for their awareness I am afraid.) Ditto her business advice (Why the hell I listened to business advice from someone who has issues with balancing her checkbook is a question I should have asked back then.)

She had her positive traits as well, but giving advice about life is not one of them.

Someday you will be on a flight sitting next to a man.

After striking up a friendly conversation, this man will bet you $10,000 that he can pull a 3 ton martini out of his left ear, and drink it down in 5 seconds.

Don't take that bet.

Because he'll do it.
