"What Have They Done to My Song Ma" is a song written and performed by Melanie Safka. It was co-written by HM Saffer II, a notable American painter and musician who worked for Warner Brothers Productions.
It was released in 1970 as the B-side of Melanie's "Ruby Tuesday" single and included on the album Candles in the Rain. The single reached the number 39 in the United Kingdom and peaked within the top 20 in Norway and the Wallonia region of Belgium.
Other artists have recorded it as "Look What They've Done to My Song Ma", after the song's first line, and this title is used on the music page at Melanie's website.

(17,110 posts)It's great that you had that experience.
When I saw the question, that song instantly popped into my head, and in the next instant I realized that the title wasn't a question, because I "knew" the title was "Look What They've Done to My Song Ma".
Well one thing led to another and I decide to to read up on the song, out of pure curiousity, then, lo and behold, Wikipedia says that the original song title was "What Have They Done to My Song Ma", which happens to be a bonfide question. Well, who am I to disagree with Wikipedia when it says what I'd like it to say? And, hot dog, now I can post this song in red dog 1's thread, with a clear conscience!

My relative who is going to be wed loves this song(as do I), having first heard it in a wonderful film by Jim Sheridan, In America. I was familiar with it years before he was born and liked it a lot. I told him about a song I loved from back in the day by the late Sandy Denny titled Who Knows Where the Time Goes . He commented that there sure isnt songs like these being composed these days.

(130 posts)I have a relative that has suggested this song for his wedding to the love of his life-How Long Will I Love You? by the Waterboys, who are known for Fishermans Blues and other nice songs. He also wants In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel, which makes a statement rather than ask a question . Lucky young lady to be with a man like this, obviously not a right winger!

(29,733 posts)I was at a teen club (I don't know if such things still exist) in Phoenix.
When it came on, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before (despite being familiar with the Smiths already) and the hairs stood up all over my body.
I ran out and bought "Meat is Murder" the next day. (The only way of getting it here in Phoenix at the time).

(11,857 posts)I never had a chance to see The Doors.
I love Jim's baritone voice. He could reach E2,B2, D5,Bb5, F6 notes that's practically impossible for most male baritones. I have ran across people who claim that Jim couldn't sing, these people absolutely have no clue what they're talking about.
I'm positive that I forgot to mention all the notes that Jim could reach, I'm just throwing a few notes out there.

(5,393 posts)Love this version from the Beacon Jams during quarantine. Its so relaxing and never fails to lift my spirits.
When I saw the band a couple summers ago, this song was one of the highlights for me. Since I had been out of the loop for so long that was my first time hearing it, a more rocking version with no string section, and then found the Beacon version while looking it up on YouTube.
With the band:
Has a kinda Black Sabbath-y feel to it.
