Avoid the rainy season I now know about
Avoid the burning season and
Avoid traveling in Muslim countries during Ramadan if you want to buy a beer without going on a scavenger hunt

sometimes referred to is mainly caused by local farmers burning old crops in the fields or burning patches of forest land to make way for new planting.

Indonesia is a Muslim country. Alcohol is legal and there are bars, night clubs etc, but during Ramadan most close. Some international hotel chains still serve, the Hilton-Doubletree would not be one of them. I found one where I could get a beer but they poured it behind the bar so no one saw the bottle.
