Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsCapital: Town or city that is the official seat of government. Capitol: The building in which
a legislature assembles. I see the word spelled those two ways and until now did not know why. I was curious why the
spell checker accepts both spellings. I checked the dictionary so now I know. I probably learned that 60 years ago
and forgot.

(5,151 posts)We went to Capitol Elementary School which was in the capital city of our state. Who says education in WV is inadequate?

(5,151 posts)When I lived there, there were Charleston High School and Andrew Jackson High. Of course, back then the band's fundraiser was a minstrel show complete with blackface.

(5,151 posts)Pretty stupid, though, isn't it? Did they at least get rid of Andrew Jackson? (the website was taking forever to load)
Anyway, thanks.

Either one is fine, depending on what they're naming the school after, I was just curious to see if there was a written explanation for their choices. Didn't find anything, though.

(5,151 posts)was only a few blocks away from the capitol building.
I lived close to the capitol, too, and climbed all over the outside, creeping along the shelf between the first floor and the second, chased by state troopers, all yelling at me to come down. They never caught me.
Best of all, my friend Randy and I found an unlocked door that led to the interior of the dome (the interior and exterior domes had a circular floor running between them). The dome was being painted that summer, and I suspect the painters left that door unlocked. At any rate, we climbed clear up to the top (outside) of the building. No troopers saw us. It was pretty awesome--we could see the office workers sitting around the edge of that fountain eating their lunch. We left initials--the first ones left there.
