Despite her dry, droll readings of writers' jokes at Roasts, her sense of humor remains in question, which leads to this odd dynamic that when she speaks from her heart, as here about her cat, it somehow comes off as comic. Reminiscent of the old lady with the precious dog that Michael PALIN kills in A Fish Called Wanda!

Martha Stewart was in mourning after her four dogs tragically killed her defenseless cat, which they mistook for an intruder.
burying the beautiful and unusual Princess Peony, the lifestyle guru wrote in a post to Instagram Sunday. the four dogs mistook her for an interloper and killed her defenseless little self. ....
Interestingly, Stewart posted about her cats fearing her dogs just last August.
My cats feel liberated because the four dogs are away on vacation. Leaving the cats alone in the house to roam, relax, recover !!! she captioned photos of her felines, one of which appeared to be Princess Peony, at the time. ....

(18,359 posts)since my Collie mix passed away. The Collie used to sleep with our cat (not snuggling but on the same couch). It is amazing how dynamics change when one of your pets passes away.
The cat has plenty of locations to hide where the dog can't get to her, and the dog doesn't actually bite just corner in a staredown. It does make life more stressful for her.
Of course the cat terrorized our old cat before she died. Made her last days very difficult. What goes around comes around I guess. Both the Aussie and the cat are nearly 15.

(77,795 posts)Have never had cats, but my neighbors now have at least two besides their two small dogs, besides some neighborhood cats. The cats are all over, including my yard, and at least they hunt intruders. Their dogs are fine with the cats. Mine barks a big bark - well, a puny bark - but runs inside if the target cat gets defensive.

(29,683 posts)I didn't think they were known for being aggressive.
Our Pyr's don't chase our own cats (who will rub on them), but will definitely go after strays they don't think belong here. I would love to get another Borzoi, but they really don't mix with cats.

(77,795 posts)Years ago a neighbor's car *TORE* through the neighborhood at midnight. Next day the news was that one of their two Chows had attacked their 3 yr old, hence the midnight run to the ER. Before that I thought of aggressive dogs as only Rottweilers, pit bulls, and such. Didn't even think of Chows.

RIP Princess Peony.

(27,633 posts)It is not OK for those cats to live terrorized lives. The dogs didn't kill the cat thinking it was an intruder. Those animals lived together in the same environment. They knew the cat and her scent. No, one of the dogs just got annoyed at the cat or was bored and attacked her. The other dogs, like in a pack, joined in the killing.
There is nothing to say that dog(s), having already experienced the "high" of the kill, will not go after another one of her cats.
If she wants to keep the dogs, fine. Then find a home for her remaining cats where they will be loved, cared for and can live without fear of being attack by dogs.
It's the right thing to do.
