with my GP yesterday and his PA asked me to perform a cognitive test. She gave me three words to remember and told me to complete the face of a clock with the time at 8:20 on a drawing of a circle she gave me.
When she returned to the examination room she asked me what the three words were. After I told her she asked for the drawing of the clock. She looked at it and said Whats this?. I said A clock, a digital clock! I drew 8:20 in the circle. If looks could kill, Id be a dead man!

(53,214 posts)quit using analog clocks because the children didn't know how to tell time with them. My reaction was, I learned to tell time in school. One of the many reasons we send children to school - to learn.

(28,493 posts)It was 4th grade. The teacher knew from experience that about half the kids entering that grade couldn't tell time, and it didn't take her long to teach us all.

(53,214 posts)would say something so ignorant. Meanwhile, I believe it is important for children to learn to tell time with analog clocks. Digital clocks only give you numbers, but the clock face gives you the concept of time.

(29,508 posts)when i was a child and it wasnt the school districts fault. once the didgital clocks came out it was a blessing for me . after that i was able to speak both digital and analog. i have both in my apt. at my middle sisters old job , she ran a tv studio/ transmitter site for stanford univ. she was the only one who knew how to read the analog gauges so and so , can you read this gauge for me please !! . after she retired " central" as they called it was torn down. on edit : i learned how to tell time when i was working out of doors washing busses and such using the suns shadow.
PatSeg
(53,214 posts)That is rather disturbing. I wonder when it started, when people stopped learning to read analog.
I love that you learned to tell time by using the sun - that is a pretty timeless way (sorry for the pun
).

I asked a supermarket worker where they kept the tinned peaches. He said, "I'll see," and walked away. I asked another and he also said, "I'll see", and walked away.
In the end I gave up and found them myself in Aisle C.

(32,345 posts)I think a fair test for each country could be done but how to do it without cheating?
I have this notion that the IQ of the United States isn't as high as some may believe.
By the way, 4 or 5 years ago I had my Dr. appointment and I usually shoot the breeze with my nurse before the doctor shows up. Well she told me she wanted my opinion of something and she proceeded to tell me a story. When the story was over she asked me questions about what she said. I think I got the much harder test than you got Floyd, yours was basically open book, mine was a pop quiz.

(15,107 posts)Then we finished up and she headed out the door. I asked, "Don't you want to know the 3 words?"
That was in October, and I still remember the words, but probably only because that happened. We both thought it was pretty funny.

it was completely worthless at work - you cant count a pulse on a patient with a digital watch. In an outpatient pediatric office, no one is hooked up to a monitor, so you have to count pulses the old fashioned way - gotta have a sweep second hand.
I think your story is a hoot.

But I do have to remember this. Draw a digital clock.
BTW, my local garage told me that they have had trouble with employees who can't read a clock with hands. They could change tires, but they had trouble with showing up on time and knowing what time it was throughout the day because all they have is a wall clock with hands.
