On February 3, 1959, rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died", after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his song "American Pie" in 1971.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_the_Music_Died

(8,480 posts)I was 12 in a Catholic girls school when Buddy Holly died. By the time the song came out we had 3 kids and whenever the song came on the car radio I turned up the sound and sang along. Didn't give a thought back then that our preschool children knew the refrain.
Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
And singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Bob Hale, the KRIB jock who emceed the concert, would be on WLS within 15 months. That's an amazing jump in the radio world; from a 1000 watt station in Mason City, Iowa (population about 30,000), to 50,000 watt WLS in Chicago in just over a year.

(6,154 posts)I remember my mom talking about it and how it was a big deal and all, but I really didn't have a clue what it was all about at that age. I do remember seeing pics of the plane on the front page of our newspaper.
