Tipping Sucks. So Why Do We Do It? - More Perfect Union

We dug into how American tipping culture got so broken, and the fight to fix it.

It turns out that your tips are subsidizing the payrolls of multi-billion dollar chains, while they pay their workers under minimum wage.

It's a system rooted in slavery, and pushed by a wealthy restaurant owners onto the rest of us.

But there's a growing movement to change it.

It’s taking the pressure off employers to pay fair wages. I always abide by longstanding etiquette. Example, if you go to a restaurant, sit down and get service, you tip. I am tipping on the quality of service I receive.
Old adage was, if you can’t afford to tip, order take out. Now takeout is not only asking for a tip, they include it automatically without even asking! Happened to me recently, called ahead to order. Looked at my receipt to see 18% tip added. WTH???
When take out charges you upfront or asks you to tip upfront, what are you tipping for? I haven’t even received service yet. I don’t know what kind of service I will receive. I have certainly picked up takeout, got to the car, or even got home to realize, incorrect orders, missing items, missing utensils.

I’ve ordered online, went through the drive thru and get to the window to pay and they are asking for a tip. Or some places have a kiosk, order from the kiosk and I am being asked to tip.

I am not buying the argument that people should tip for every little thing because they are not paid well.
Sorry but not only do I think this is unfair and borderline abusive to the customer, it’s unfair to the workers. The employers need to pay fair wages. People that are “tip shaming” are not helping to curb behavior of employers. One day I forgot my wallet but wanted a coffee, all I had was a few singles and coins in the car, just enough to get coffee. Young lady at the drive through, asked me if I wanted to add a tip. For what?

I have no problem tipping for sit down service, food /grocery delivery, salon services and the like. I refuse to tip for takeout.

Front line. The ones face to face with A--hole customers.

Best hug I've had since wife died was after a 50+% tip to girl dealing with folks that needed unlimited substitutions for breakfast. She was a friend of a niece and that morning we were pissed buddies. Customers treating people taking their orders as prey is my red flag, done, over and out.
