On the same day U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Kyiv to announce $1 billion in new U.S. aid to Ukraine, 17 Ukrainians were killed in a Russian missile attack on a Donetsk market. Its very painful for me to see all the streets and cities that I spent my childhood in to be completely destroyed by the ongoing war, says Hanna Perekhoda, Ukrainian historian from the Donetsk region on a speaking tour of the U.S. calling for an end to the war by driving out Putins occupation. If we let Russian authoritarians win, it will mean that the authoritarian forces also in our countries, in the U.S., for example, will grow stronger. Perekhoda is joined on the speaking tour by Russian historian Ilya Budraitskis, who agrees that this war is about Putins regime maintaining its power. This criminal war is not just a war against Ukraine. Its a war of the Russian regime against its own society, says Budraitskis.

Democracy Now!'s title of its YouTube video seems to play down the idea that this war is a legitimate defense of the existence of Ukraine and of Ukraine's civil society.
It's an odd way to both minimize the guests' qualifications and to sideline their message. In this interview, it is clearly pointed out by these guests that Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is due to the Putin Regime trying to defend itself internally against democratization inside of Russia, a defense to be achieved by removing neighboring democracies which might influence the Russian people to rid themselves of Putin.

but there won't be any peace while Putin is in office and Russia is trying to occupy Ukraine. That's just the way it is.
