'Gimme a break!': Sen. Kaine vows to strip pipeline from debt ceiling deal - Alex Wagner - MSNBC

Senator Tim Kaine talks with Alex Wagner about his objection to the inclusion of Mountain Valley Pipeline in the debt ceiling deal and his intention to remove that portion of the bill with an amendment when it comes to the Senate for consideration. While that piece of the deal is seen as a political concession to Joe Manchin, Kaine expresses particular frustration at not being consulted despite the pipeline affecting portions of his state, Virginia. - Aired on 05/31/2023.

This is somewhat a formality that he offer amendments for the purpose he describes. But more than that, his objection then becomes important public record to be used later. Later, when lawsuits are filed against this portion of the bill/law, the courts could strike it deeming it unconstitutional.

According to the Senator, none of the stakeholders were contacted or allowed to participate in this agreement, that's why it has never passed prior and has to be snuck into a do or die bill. It can't go forward without those who would actually lose their land, for many that's all they have, having input. So there will be litigation which will probably make this part a moot point. The Senator's public record objection will be useful in that litigation.

And I completely agree, Senator Kaine could not let this go by without taking action because of the harm it could do to his constituents.
