Matt Gaetz is in hot water after bringing in an accused murderer to lead a House hearing in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Gaetz brought in the man, a veteran who moved to Gaetz's district in recent years, and praised him for being a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment. What Gaetz didn't know at the time - allegedly - is that the man is facing trial for murder in Michigan. Gaetz has apologized to the victim's family, but the damage is already done, as Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains.

Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz has caused quite a stir. After he invited an accused murderer to lead the pledge of allegiance ahead of a Republican house hearing Matt Gaetz invited the individual who is currently a constituent in Matt Gaetz's district, invited him to lead the opening of a house judiciary committee hearing The man is, uh, named Corey Beakman. And Matt Gaetz introduced him saying, it is my pleasure and distinct honor to introduce Beakman. Then he praised him for holding a position on the board of a local gun club. So Matt Gates gets up there and says, Hey, look, here's somebody that none of you know, I've invited him to the House of Representatives with clearly without vetting him. Uh, but it's cool because he likes guns and we're Republicans, so we should be cool with this. And then after it happened, which I believe it happened February 2nd or February 3rd, Matt Gates caught hell because it turns out this man was accused of murder in his former home state of Michigan.
He has not yet gone on trial, but he was arrested. He had a standoff with the SWAT team for an hour and a half before finally surrendering himself after allegedly murdering one man and shooting a woman. Uh, and her kids, by the way, were also in the house when he allegedly did these things. And Matt Gae swears, oh my God, I didn't know this. I thought he was just a gun enthusiast. I didn't know he was somebody that used guns on other people. And he apologized to the family of the victim. The victim's family said, you know, we accept your apology, but here's the thing I don't buy about this particular situation. If you Google Corey Beakman's name, you can find the arrest report, like literally on the first page of Google, okay? You don't have to go hunting for it. You don't have to go eight, nine pages back in Google.
You don't have to click on the news tab. It's right there. So are all of the other local news stories talking about what he allegedly did. Here's what I found, and this is from long before Gates ever invited the man to, to Congress, long before the man even moved to Florida. Police arrested Corey Beakman 32 at the scene, and he was later charged with open murder assault with intent to murder, and two counts of felony firearm for allegedly killing Billy Buchanan and shooting another woman inside the home. The woman's two children were also inside at the time. Beakman was shot, both of them making it out unharmed. It took a swat TM to get Beakman out of the home after a standoff that lasted an hour and a half. And while he was initially booked on the multiple felony charges related to Billy's murder, he was eventually released from jail. And the case has not yet been resolved with a plea deal or gone to trial that was available again on the first page of Google for Matt Gates to look up, or

(28,706 posts)Despite it being as easy to find as the fact that he had been accused.
The charges were dropped - so of course he can travel.
Doesnt mean that he didnt do it or that hes worthy of being honored
but thats why hes out and about.
(Charges were dropped because the only witness refused to make herself available)

(10,599 posts)And is he in more trouble than in 2021 when he was going to jail for sex with a minor across state lines?
Will he be given 10 more terms in the House as punishment for this "trouble?"

(28,706 posts)In theory his reputation is dented - but hes in a district that wasnt in danger when he himself looked likely to be charged. It obviously isnt all that career threatening to honor someone else who could have been charged
