The Democrats encouraged the MAGA nut cases to vote for some truly weak candidates in the GOP primaries. One tactic was to run negative ads against the MAGA candidate that promoted the fact that these candidates are TFG supported nut cases. The MAGA wing ended nominating a number of weak candidates who were easier to beat in the general election.

Democratic officials placed a highly risky bet this year, intervening in several Republican primaries in order to boost right-wing radicals. In Pennsylvanias gubernatorial race, Democrats gave Doug Mastriano a boost in his Republican primary, and he ended up losing the general election.
In Marylands gubernatorial race, Democrats gave Dan Cox a boost in his Republican primary, and he ended up losing the general election.
In Illinois gubernatorial race, Democrats gave Darren Bailey a boost in his Republican primary, and he ended up losing the general election.
In New Hampshires U.S. Senate race, Democrats gave Don Bolduc a boost in his Republican primary, and he ended up losing the general election.

Perhaps they would have won those races anyway, but the money they spent would have been better used in other races.
Especially those where the house was narrowly lost like in NY.
