Mehdi Hasan looks at how religious extremists in the Christian nationalist movement have cast Donald Trump as a messianic figure and threaten to make democracy secondary to empowering Donald Trump as an expression of divine will. Aired on 05/20/2022.

Haven't they been doing this since day one of the tRump phenomena? You will be hard pressed to find a stance more anti-God, or anti-religion for that matter, than placing a politician or anyone or anything above God.

(255,525 posts)TFG has got to be the least "religious" POTUS in history. It was obvious he was not used to being in a church when he wandered around uncomfortably during former President George H.W. Bush's funeral, while the other first couples sat quietly. And then there was that clusterf**k at the church across from the White House - when he ordered those occupying the church grounds to be gassed and removed so he could stage a photo op, holding a Bible upside down. And yet so-called "religious groups" support him??

I can't remember what the occasion was, but there was video showing how he seemed to be unable to read the printed program or follow what was going on. I think it may have been due to his poor reading ability as much as anything, but he certainly gave the impression of being in an unfamiliar situation and not knowing how he was supposed to act.
Then there was the time during his candidacy when he was proudly showing off a Bible that he said had belonged to his mother. He gushed about how much it supposedly meant to him, but came up completely blank when asked about his favorite passages.
Not only is he obviously not a sincere believer in any form of Christianity, he doesnt even know how to convincingly act like he is. And yet evangelicals have enthusiastically supported him from the get go and continue to do so. It's absolutely baffling to me.

(16,447 posts)Like many people his age, he needs reading glasses but refuses to be seen wearing them. A rare photo captured a bespectacled BLOTUS in the privacy of his limo when he thought nobody was looking.

(255,525 posts)He has to be the least "Christian" president we've ever had - in the sense of following the principles of Christ. I don't even think he know what that means - he's certainly not "neighborly," nor forgiving, he doesn't know how to be giving without expecting anything in return and he definitely "covets" just about anything that someone else has and he doesn't. I had to take required religion classes in school and I can't think of any of the Commandments he doesn't break on a regular basis - but then the so-called "Christian" right isn't what I'd call "Christian" in the true sense, either.
And if I had to choose the most Christian presidents in my lifetime, Jimmy Carter would be at the top and Joe Biden would be right up there, too - and Barack Obama set an awfully good example, as well. And those aren't exactly examples TFG would ever seek to emulate, in fact, just the opposite...

(77,323 posts)... between right wing Evangelical churches, Trump/GOP worship, American Flags, and Confederate
leanings were everywhere. Putin was very successful in installing to Trump in order to cause division
in America.
There was a barn there that had a Trump and Jesus arm in arm picture and the lawn had American
flags, the stars and bars (rebel) flags, Christian cross flags, and anti Joe Biden signs.

(255,525 posts)Sounds ghastly! And isn't Pence supposed to be the "Christian" one of the pair? How is following and praising a known liar and grifter espousing "Christian" values? At least he said that TFG was "wrong" once. Come to think of it, that's the only time I can think of that he spoke up for himself...
And I'm very sorry that you had to experience such blatant expressions of hypocrisy. Yesterday I had to take my dog for an appointment and in the parking lot an elderly lady was getting into her car - which had both TFG and Stefanik stickers on the back bumper. I know better than to confront people like that, but it bothered me just the same.

(12,667 posts)Saw it as I passed the abandon quarry going into town. A huge tent surrounded by flags. Trump flags with Christian and national flags surround the tents. The tractor trailers were still setting up.
We get revivals setting up all the time this time of year. They stay for a month or so. This is the first one I've seen that was worshipping Trump. Usually they post self affirming signs trying to get people to come in and watch and donate. Not this group. They got the different colored Trump flags, with the US flag, with the Southern confederate flag with the Gadsden flag and TN flag. So many flags.
I wonder how long these idiots are going to stay?

(2,010 posts)I bookmarked this article after seeing it here on DU. I'm Jewish and don't have a background in Christan theology and prophecy, but I find myself fascinated and able to believe in the antichrist after reading the article.

Does the Bible predict the future with stunning accuracy as so many in the end-times camp have claimed?
I grew up in the rapture-me-outta-here end times movement, and have spilled no shortage of ink critiquing it even poking a bit of fun at it. As a theologian I fall into a category of belief that sees biblical prophecies about the end as being events that have mostly been fulfilled in the past, but I try to hold that belief gently and recognize I could be wrong.
To honor those who have given me such warning, I decided to spend the past week studying the most significant biblical prophecies and descriptions typically believed by my conservative friends to refer the Antichrist. If my evangelical friends are correct, and if its entirely possible that the Antichrist is on the global scene today, I certainly wouldnt want to be the only person in the room who didnt recognize the Antichrist when I saw him.
In case you too are a bit rusty in the area of biblical predictions about the coming Antichrist and dont want to be oblivious if such a person were to arise, consider me your chief antichristologist who is more than happy to help you out.
Here are the no-kidding-not-satire-prophecies and signs of the antichrist the Bible tells us to watch out for
and that blew my mind by the time I was done:

Most of this tribalism is not that Christian. They make a false God of their Tribalism and miss the Christian part. Jesus was not a big fan of that.
A house divided cannot stand. Most Christians in theory aspire to one catholic (universal) Church. However, nobody wants another group telling the how to worship. Most would find the idea of actual US Christian nationalism frightening for that reason.
