Richard Lee Harris was not swept up in a misunderstanding.

Harris traveled to Washington from Oregon for Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally on January 6, 2021. According to evidence presented at his trial, before he entered the Capitol, he recorded a selfie video outside the building and bragged: “They tear gassed us, front fucking line baby, we’re storming the Capitol.” Then he entered the Capitol through the northwest Senate Wing door at about 2:14 p.m. — one minute after the first rioter breached the building. He was not following the crowd. He was leading it.

Once inside, Harris menaced Capitol Police officers from the front of a large mob, helping to force them aside so that the insurrectionists could continue into the building. He climbed on presidential statues, putting his blue camouflage “MAGA” hat on a statue of Gerald Ford. Then, inside the Rotunda, he picked up a U.S. Capitol Police landline and used it to threaten the constitutional officers the mob most wanted to reach.

“Can I speak to Pelosi?” he yelled. “Yeah, we’re coming, bitch. Oh, Mike Pence? We’re coming for you, too, you fucking traitor.”
