Of Course It Had to Be Jared

Jared Kushner arrived in Washington in 2017 looking like he’d wandered in from a WeWork pitch deck — slender, serene, with the occasional glow up — and was promptly handed the nuclear codes, Middle East peace, criminal justice reform and whatever else was lying around the Resolute Desk.

But there was a hitch. The spies didn’t like him.

Career national security officials — the gray men and women who don’t swoon over dynasties — concluded that the president’s son-in-law should not receive a top security clearance. They were worried about Jared’s foreign contacts, his finances, and his (over) leverage. In other words, they were doing their jobs.

So Donald Trump overruled them. In Trumpworld, if the intelligence community says “risk,” that just means the president has to denigrate the “Deep State” louder.
