Donald Trump's victory was powered by voters who felt that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris didn't care about them
Many Democratic strategists, activists, and voters thought that the 2024 presidential election would be similar to the 2016 and 2020 elections: the key to beating a deeply unpopular Donald Trump was finding the right candidate. In other words, the Democrats just needed to not blow it. After all, Trump famously won in 2016 because Hillary Clinton was nearly as unpopular as he was. However, this time around it was different.
Voters liked Harris slightly more than they liked Trump, but they thought (despite an abundance of evidence to the contrary) that Trump was better at governing.
In a Yahoo! News/YouGov poll conducted October 29th-31st, 45% of likely voters were favorable towards Trump while 54% were unfavorable, compared to 47% who were favorable towards Kamala Harris and 52% who were unfavorable.

Voters went from being sick of Trump during his (first) presidency to mythologizing the pre-COVID Trump years. They thought of them as a time in which the economy was good and the government had control. In contrast, from the point of view of many key swing voters, the Biden-Harris administration lost control over the country the last four years.
