Trump was doing historically well among Hispanic voters before Madison Square Garden rally backlash

(CNN) Donald Trump’s Sunday rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City featured numerous instances of speakers making racist or bigoted remarks. Perhaps none more notoriously so than comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s offensive comments about Puerto Rico.

What makes those remarks – which the former president’s campaign has sought to distance itself from – so noteworthy is they come at a time when Trump seems to be making inroads with Hispanic voters. In fact, he seems to be on his way to doing better with this group than any GOP presidential nominee since George W. Bush in 2004.

Consider an average of recent polling data on Hispanic voters: Kamala Harris is ahead of Trump by just 13 points. That’s well off an average of post-election and exit poll data from 2020, when Joe Biden carried Hispanic voters by 26 points.

What’s remarkable is that this 26-point deficit, itself, was an improvement for Trump from 2016. Trump lost Hispanic voters by 39 points to Hillary Clinton, according to an average of exit poll and post-election data.

3. These Republicans always try to get Latino voters

But they always shoot themselves in the foot and mouth by giving in to their racist rhetoric which then turns off many conservative leaning Latinos.

I remember after the 2012 election they did lots of navel gazing and concluded they had to tamp down on the bigotry but then Trump came along with his red meat to the bigots and racists in the party and we know how that ended up.

Until the Republicans purge themselves of these racists the party will continue to decline. They can't keep rigging votes and pull off narrow electoral wins forever.

6. Well, we have a large latino population in Texas

many are liberal but remember that many are also Catholic. Catholics don't vote as a monolith more than any other group, but there are definitely conservative Catholics who are anti-choice. So even though we saw high turnout for Clinton, maybe some are voting on abortion.

Ignore everything else and vote on something that is your business not you getting in someone else's business. If you don't like abortion don't have one. Good luck when they come looking for your papers.
