WASHINGTON (AP) — During his first term as president, Donald Trump tested the limits of how he could use the military to achieve policy goals. If given a second term, the Republican and his allies are preparing to go much further, reimagining the military as an all-powerful tool to deploy on U.S. soil.

He has pledged to recall thousands of American troops from overseas and station them at the U.S. border with Mexico. He has explored using troops for domestic policy priorities such as deportations and confronting civil unrest. He has talked of weeding out military officers who are ideologically opposed to him.

Trump's vision amounts to a potentially dramatic shift in the role of the military in U.S. society, carrying grave implications for both the country's place in the world and the restraints that have traditionally been placed on domestic use of the military.

As Trump’s campaign heads into its final stretch against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, he is promising forceful action against immigrants who do not have permanent legal status. Speaking in Colorado on Friday, the Republican described the city of Aurora as a “war zone” controlled by Venezuelan gangs, even though authorities say that was a single block of the Denver suburb, and the area is safe again.

2. I think if he tried anything like this, we'd see the first military mutiny against a sitting President in history.

He's done a great job of alienating most military officers and a good portion of the troops. These guys are trained to do their job, they wouldn't stand for a President violating the constitution that they also swore an oath to defend and protect.

He won't get the chance, since Harris will be the next commander in Chief.

4. Don't forget the alienation of us veterans, too!

Believe me, there are thousands of us pissed at him. Just because you take your oath to start your service, it doesn't relieve you of that oath when you muster out. I'm 69 years old... female... one of the very first female military police in the Air Force back in my day. I can shoot all kinds of guns, and the only time I'm afraid of them is when some redneck is holding one. I may not be able to see the target so well these days, but most of these guys with their toys are bigger than the broadside of a barn!

Whatever happens, most of the military will hold. At first. That's before he kicks out everyone who doesn't agree with him. Thats where units of veterans come together, IMO, to fight him. Believe me, if my father, a nazi-fighting WWII vet, were here, he'd be right there with us, wheelchair and all!

The most important thing to remember, to me, is that WE are the "Center"... if WE hold together, they can't stand!
