Mass deportation not just cruel; it would be costly

By Francis Wilkinson / Bloomberg Opinion

The American Immigration Council, a pro-immigration think tank, issued a report last week estimating the costs — financial costs only — of deporting all the undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

The financial impacts of deporting between 11 million and 14 million people are, not surprisingly, vast. The group’s low estimate starts at $315 billion and rises sharply over time, while the report also concludes that mass deportation of undocumented workers and consumers would subtract more than 4 percent from U.S. gross domestic product. Given the scale of the projected deportation effort, the estimates are necessarily inexact. Yet, the accounting exercise is based on real-world contingencies.

Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, have made clear their intention to rid the nation of undocumented immigrants, sometimes using explicitly Nazi-like rhetoric about “vermin” who are “poisoning the blood of our country” to drive the point home. Trump has publicly promised the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”

Trump’s former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement director Tom Homan, a leader of the anti-immigrant movement, confirmed that Trump will institute a “historic deportation operation” should he regain power. MAGA apparatchik Stephen Miller likewise promised a “blitz” of federal force against immigrants and any legal efforts to shield them. “Trump will unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers to implement the most spectacular migration crackdown,” Miller, who seems to relish the rhetoric of authoritarian vengeance, told The New York Times. At the Republican National Convention in July, signs were distributed to attendees demanding: “Mass Deportation Now!”

I'm no expert but looking at it from a Los Angeles/California perspective, it would depress the economy??? BamaRefugee Oct 14 #1

First off, thousands of apartments would suddenly be empty. I would think landlords would have to lower rents drastically to get income flowing again. And to get new tenants, they will have to improve slum like buildings, (part of my work), but there won't be any workers to do the job.

Thousands of merchants will lose thousands of customers. Sales tax, gas tax, and others will plummet. Payments into Social Security, etc will plummet. Among other things this would hugely impact fire and police budgets, wouldn't it? Rendering the comfy supreme elites way more vulnerable???

Thousands of merchants will also lose thousands of employees. And the *supreme elite* folks who are left are NOT gonna take those jobs. I don't see how things like fast food joints, auto repair, garbage collection, construction, landscaping, hundreds of types of businesses will not be able to keep their doors open. The ones that can stay in business will be charging megabucks for things that were formerly routine, semi-affordable expenses for the general population.

If they target Pacific Islanders, forget about getting decent care in hospitals or nursing homes.

There's too many other possibilities to list.

None of this is racist, please, just my observations on the place where I live, and my work in the legal field takes me every day to the homes and businesses of folks vulnerable to this.

(which he can't do because he can't THINK logically) He would have to self-deport, along with deport every American living here. We ALL are of a "Melting Pot" of immigrants. The only non-immigrants would be like my family on my great-grandfather's side -- Native American.

Of course, he means all non-white immigrants... but no one has called him on his racism in his threats or brought out what it would mean drawn to its natural, logical conclusion. Every single one of us had ancestors who came from somewhere else, and settled here looking for a 2nd chance, or just a better life.

And, for the point... I detest this idea of "white culture"... we have NO "white culture" as far as I'm concerned. Each of the immigrants brought their culture to the Americas and it rooted here from there. Like Halloween... like Christmas... like Easter, for example. Ireland, British Isles, Germany.

They want "white culture"... then let them throw away their bibles and xtianist ideas. Let them embrace Bride, Father Christmas, and Eostra as gods. That's THERE white heritage! How dare they throw away those white cultural roots on a brown, middle eastern prophet and martyr, most don't even follow His words, anyway.

Any any of these are just as valid as the Orishas of the Haitians, IMO. They brought their culture here, just as we did. Hypocrisy! Thy name is Xtianist! Not Christian, because you only operate in cruelty in His name, despite his words. You might as well be calling on the War God, Marduk! Of course, the god you actually follow (but don't name) was jealous, (and I say narcissistic) Jehovah... the old male War God that conquered the male and female gods of ancient Judaism. I'll still say "Hale Sophia!"
