She wanted a baby — but her fetus had no chance of survival. How Idaho's abortion laws led to devastating trauma

(Salon) Rebecca Vincen-Brown was still in her first trimester of pregnancy, in the late fall of 2022, when things started to go wrong. She had blood drawn for a standard genetic test called noninvasive prenatal testing, or NIPT, which can detect increased risks for various chromosomal disorders. The results of the test took slightly longer than normal to come back, and when they did, Vincen-Brown received a troubling phone call: The test was “inconclusive” because not enough fetal DNA was detected in her blood.

As she would later learn, her fetus did indeed have triploidy, which appears to occur at random and is estimated to affect 1 to 3 percent of all pregnancies in the United States.

Vincen-Brown was offered two choices, both of them disheartening. “We could keep carrying the baby, which would likely lead to a miscarriage or a stillbirth, or the baby would be born full-term and shortly die after that,” she said. “Or we could get an abortion.”

After several rounds of phone calls to abortion providers in neighboring states, Vincen-Brown and her husband secured an appointment several days later at a clinic in Portland, Oregon, more than 400 miles away. Her husband took time off work and they loaded up the car. Since they had no reliable child care they brought along their two-year-old daughter, who was going through potty training at the time. They tried to make the journey seem like a “normal road trip,” Vincen-Brown said, offering their daughter “lots of bribery snacks” and occasionally stopping at a park or playground to let her play on the swings. ...........(more)

1. Abortion Travel Is Going To Get Worse

Travel out of state for abortions is going to get even more difficult unless the forced-birth fanatics are reined in. Many people don’t realize that their movements can be tracked using apps on their cell phones and in their automobiles’ computers. What’s more insurance companies and other data collectors are already more than happy to sell data about their clients.

Anti-abortion fanstics already keep databases. They keep records of doctors, caregivers and staff at family planning clinics. THAT IS A FACT!

Republican politicians might reassure us that these policies would never be used to harass or prosecute patients. We’ve seen how little their word is worth. Remember the exemptions for rape and incest? Real gone!

Republicans are in cahoots with forced birth fanatics to set up a quasi private police state.

The courts may (or may not) stop this someday—in a few years. Maybe…

In the meantime there’s only one tactic that will work. Throw them out of office. No benefit of the doubt—VOTE THEM OUT!!!

2. Horrendous result of draconian healthcare laws.

No matter what right-wing politicians say, abortion is healthcare, and no politician should ever have the right to deny healthcare to women. In Republican states, women and their fetuses re just expected to die. I hope Alito and the rest of the right-wing Catholic cabal on the SC are happy with their result of placing their religious beliefs over the health and t of women.

3. She lives in Idaho-istan. Hope she moves before her daughter reaches puberty.

Politicians making medical decisions to placate religious extremists will kill women without a qualm (but no women in the MAGA politician families would have to endure this extended torment in order to get appropriate medical care).

4. Conversing with a self-described conservative the other day

the topic of abortion came up. He's dropped hints that he's a "rad trad" catholic (I deal with him over a business matter; he's not a personal friend). I asked him whether he had heard of women going into sepsis because they were denied needed reproductive health care. He got a distant tone in his voice and replied that he "had heard of such things", then changed the subject.

The kooks just want to shut their eyes to the consequences of their actions.
