Trump Admin Warns 4 States Over 250,000 Potential Noncitizens Voting

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin this week sent letters to officials in four states, warning that a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) review identified what the agency described as more than 250,000 potential non-citizens registered to vote.
Mullin sent letters to the secretaries of state in California, New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania, urging them to work with the department and respond within two weeks regarding efforts to review voter registration records.
The department said its preliminary review found that there may be as many as 190,832 potential non-citizen voter registrations in California, 35,152 in New Jersey, 15,903 in Nevada and 14,576 in Pennsylvania. About 154 million people voted in the 2024 presidential election, so 250,000 represents roughly 0.16 percent of that total.
A copy of the letter obtained by Newsweek shows that DHS told Pennsylvania officials that a preliminary review of voter registration records identified as many as 14,576 potential non-citizens on the state's voter rolls. The department said that, as one example, it identified 8,594 registered voters whose names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers matched records DHS associated with non-citizens. Newsweek has not yet independently verified the DHS figures or the department's determination that the identified registrations belong to non-citizens.

(like his predecessors) our beleaguered attempts to block his type of authoritarianism is weakened further. His far-right extremism is not new, but in the long term it is abnormally nurtured by millions of voters whether we win some electoral victories or not. We will always have a wealth imbalance to contend with stultifying impact on true democracy.

(905 posts)how would the feds know that California has 35,000 non-citizen voters if they don't have California's voter data?
Second, voter information is public and anyone can get it, if they want. Heck, I can walk down to my county clerk's office and ask for our county's voter data. It costs $75 for the complete list (digitized even!).
Finally, voter registration DOES NOT EQUAL an actual vote. Anyone can fill out a voter registration form. Not everyone will be approved. In Colorado, I had to bring a copy of my birth certificate to get a driver license, which then automatically registered me to vote.
Not sure how California does it.

(4,338 posts)And I believe it's illegal to even apply if you're not a citizen, though the penalties are significantly less than for actually going through with voting. And I think it's also a requirement that states make sure non-citizen don't become 'registered' and/or remove them from the rolls immediately if they find out a registered person is not eligible.
That being said I think all these states ARE following these laws, are doing their due-diligence, and the administration is probably wrong about the large majority of these cases. If they're not, then the state says 'thanks for the list, we'll look into these accusations and if any are accurate, we'll remove them from rolls, and pursue legal remedies against those people who illegally registered' and that's it.
But like you say, registrations are not VOTES. The actual number of non-citizens going through with voting are a extremely tiny fraction of the total number of votes.

(242 posts)1) Voter registration DOES NOT EQUAL an actual vote.
2) Receiving a request form for an absentee ballot does not equal an actual vote
3) Actually completing a request form for an absentee ballot and sending it back does not equal an actual vote
4) Completing a provisional ballot does not equal an actual vote
5)Filling out your deceased parents automically sent ballots (Florida) with your choices and sending it back separately with your own ballot does not equal dead parents voting (those ballots will be caught dont try it, it is a felony).
The system, in all 50 states, shut up Ohio, you are not special, is very secure. Many accounting cross-checks are in place.

(905 posts)as you know, do a really good job of comparing signatures from the mailed ballot envelope to signatures on file.
The ones that get rejected from the Agilis machine go to a group that does signature verification by hand. If they can't match the signature to one of many on file they send a letter to the voter to show up in-person at the Clerk's office.
The system works.

(43,527 posts)He's just a bunch of BS accusations with no proof.
Who knows whether he's using voter registration lists that are current? If they are current where did he get them? They have already lost 15 federal cases where they sued to get the voter registrations, and the federal judges have all shot them down. They are 0-15 in these voter registration lawsuits.
So now they're claiming they have current up-to-date voter lists? Where and how did they get them? Let's see if they even know what they're doing. Chances are really, really good that they haven't got a clue.

(9,246 posts)laying the groundwork to declare they will not seat Democrats who win from certain states. Along with actions like armed presence intimidation, shutting down streets leading to the polls with phony claims of "security operations" etc. and like claiming fraud and seizing ballots so that they can "negate" enough ballots so that a recount will show the Democrat lost rather than won.
They will dare the people to rise up in the streets because they actually desire that so they can further federalize and they have amply demonstrated no restraint in falsely imprisoning people and indeed murdering them in the streets. Not only is there no restraint on their part but rather a yearning to kill. As in the Caribbean, Venezuela, Iran etc.

(11,100 posts)Nobody has any power or authority to do anything to prevent any member of the new House of Representatives from being seated on Jan 3, 2027 (all 435 members will be sworn in at once).
The Speaker has no role in seating and swearing in the new Congress because at thaat point he is no longer speaker. His term as speaker ends Jan 3, 2027 as do the terms of all 435 members of the House. Those people who are reelected still need to be re-sworn in just the same as new members. That is done by the House Clerk, a non-partisan position. This will also happen on Jan 3, 2027. The clerk also conducts all business until a new Speaker is elected (could be the same as the old speaker).
Also, approximately half of all House seats are in states with Democratic Governors so there is basically 0 chance of those elections not being certified.

(9,246 posts)not saying such a thing would be legitimate or eventually allowed by the court. Taking illegal actions and failing to follow clear laws and court decisions is the demonstrated brand for these people. They still don't comply with rulings on immigration detention for example. They clearly have failed to comply with the law requiring turning over the Epstein files as another example. Delaying and hamstringing seating people/giving a vote as a general matter was already done with SC justices and a US Representative.
The effort will be to gum things up enough to delay certification of results etc. and put off as long as possible control of Congress by Democrats. Even if, and I hope we are successful, in turning the Congress Blue takes place I look for the GQP to gum up the Senate the same way they did under Biden. They will ignore House investigative subpoenas and know full well that any referral to DOJ for contempt will go nowhere. They are going to ride out the next 2+ years with delay and obstruction while they continue purges and destruction. They don't care about anybody saying "no" to them. Not the courts, Congress or the people. Bottom line is they don't intend to comply with any laws and they have no reservations about breaking any laws.

(11,100 posts)Republicans absolutely can screw with the Senate elections. But they can not "gum up" the House elections. There is literally a 0% chance of Democrats not being seated in the house. Unlike the Supreme Court or seating new representatives during the Congressional session, there is no political partisan participation in the process. At the end of the current session, there are 0 Republicans and 0 Democrats in the House until the new Congress is sworn in. Therefore there is NO Republican with any ability to stop anything. PERIOD.

In fact, based on all we should have learned by now, analysts should first state that the administration is likely lying, exaggerating, or catapulting propaganda...AGAIN. That's the starting point: assumptions of cheating and lying are likely closer to reality than assuming what they say is real.

(1,194 posts)To combat this obvious attempt to skew the midterms? Its not like its been a secret, they are going to try and prevent people from voting, from counting legit votes, and making it hard to vote.
They are also going to flood the zone with lies and confusion, which will be gleefully repeated and amplified by the media.

(20,244 posts)"Voting rights, voter intimidation and the politics of voting have been central themes of TPM reporting going back more than 25 years. Over a quarter century you develop a lot of institutional knowledge. Today were seeing some of the most egregious journalistic negligence, sloppiness and ignorance helping propel forward the Trump White Houses assault on the integrity of the 2026 midterms. The piece I want to point you to this evening is Politicos claim that DHS found 'thousands of non-citizens on voter rolls in California and three other states.' "
"This claim is almost certainly false for reasons Ill explain. I want to briefly summarize the multiple levels of journalistic negligence in Politicos reporting."
"Versions of this claim have been made repeatedly by various right-wing groups and sometimes government agencies. In every case the original claims fall apart on closer scrutiny. In most cases they involve crudely cross-referenced databases in which similar names lead to misidentified individuals, or former non-citizens are listed on old databases who have subsequently been naturalized. In some cases, its sloppiness. In other cases, its malicious disregard designed to generate false claims."
"The key point is that theres a long history of these claims and an equally long history of these claims falling apart in the face of the most basic scrutiny. Indeed, there have been repeated instances of detailed audits in red states, run by marquee Republican elected officials, who havent been able to come up with more than a handful of non-citizens on voting rolls. Its even more rare that any of them actually vote. (Thats important because there are various ways non-citizens can end up on voter rolls through things like motor voter auto-enrollment. And being on a voter roll doesnt mean anyone actually voted.) If you know anything about this topic you know these claims always fall apart."

(185,036 posts)The claim came as the Trump administration vowed to withhold funding from states that dont participate in federal programs purporting to secure elections.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/07/17/trump-said-278000-noncitizens-are-voting-rolls-experts-say-thats-wrong
The presidents claim suggests that noncitizens who cast ballots could unlawfully swing election results in a particularly tight federal race.
But a review of public documents and interviews with government officials and election experts shows that the figure is significantly overstated and that officials have struggled to find instances of voter fraud by noncitizens to back the presidents assertions. Assessments by government officials and outside election experts have repeatedly concluded that noncitizens represent a miniscule number of voters.
We can affirm that on its face, we refute these claims. These numbers are wildly speculative at best and the Department of Homeland Security hasnt shared anything that backs it up, Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar said in a statement.......
But relying on publicly available data means that federal officials were probably not using verified and up-to-date information. States often intentionally publish incomplete identifying information on their public voting rolls such as an incomplete birthday to protect peoples privacy.....
Election experts said that using this public data would result in confusing the identities of people who have common or similar names. In many instances, naturalized citizens remain improperly labeled as noncitizens in government databases, experts said.
Even as the administration is touting the SAVE database, contradictory court rulings muddled the picture on whether states can participate.
In June, a federal judge in D.C. halted full use of the database when she found some citizens had wrongly had their voter registrations revoked because officials were relying on a system they knew to be unreliable. The D.C. Circuit is considering an appeal of that ruling.
