Jamaican Anger Rises Over Hosting Immigrants Deported From US

Source: Newsweek

Published Jul 07, 2026 at 12:00 PM EDT

Opposition politicians, protesters, and many Jamaicans are pushing back against a government agreement that would allow the Caribbean nation to temporarily receive certain immigrants deported from the United States.

The criticism follows the Jamaican government’s announcement that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to accept limited numbers of third-country nationals, migrants who are neither U.S. nor Jamaican citizens, while arrangements are made for their return to their home countries.

The full text of the memorandum has not been publicly released by either government.

Jamaica said last month it would accept up to 25 third-country nationals every two weeks under a U.S. transit agreement, with the migrants expected to continue to other destinations after a temporary stay on the island, according to National Security Minister Horace Chang. Newsweek has contacted Jamaica's government and the opposition party for comment via email.
