The U.S. military launched new attacks on Iran Tuesday in retaliation for Iranian attacks against commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command said in a post on X.
U.S. Central Command forces have begun launching a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway, CENTCOM said. The U.S. strikes are in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Irans demonstrated aggression was unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire.
The attacks come as U.S. and Iranian officials have been negotiating about maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway through which some 20% of the worlds oil passed before the war.
Iran has argued that it has a right to charge a fee for ships passing through the strait.

U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East, said in a statement issued shortly after 5 p.m. that it had begun powerful strikes in response to attacks on vessels that had been crewed by innocent civilians in the Strait of Hormuz. The vital waterway has been at the center of tensions between Washington and Tehran for months.
U.S. officials called the Iranian attacks unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of a ceasefire to which U.S. and Iranian officials agreed. The truce has been shaky from the start, with strikes launched by both sides.
A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said he anticipates that Central Command will say more about the strikes after they are complete. They are expected to go on for some time.
The U.S. strikes were launched hours after the Trump administration revoked a waiver for Iranian oil sales that had been put in place as part of the agreement struck between the United States and Iran last month the primary benefit to Iran of the ceasefire deal.
The reversal immediately pushed up the cost of Brent crude, the international benchmark for oil prices.
Iran is playing trump. trump is meeting with NATO and the news of these strikes will drive up gasoline prices in the US. Iran wants to make sure that everyone including shippers and insurance companies all now that Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz

(275 posts)This is obviously all fishy as a Sunday market at the docks. We saw stories for a few days of commercial ships hit by "projectiles" which is already sketchy ambiguity. No report that I know of identified the "projectiles" or their origin, then next thing we know they are used as pretext to start all over again, and yeah, it's true, these ceasefire "breaches" do seem suspiciously tied to certain oil price thresholds. Could it be that the build up coincided with July 4th weekend and the price pumping coincides with the Monday night immediately after? Hmmm....
