Kenyas health minister has ordered an immediate halt to the construction of a US-backed Ebola quarantine facility, following a court ruling that found him in contempt for failing to observe suspension orders.
The directive from Health Minister Aden Duale came after he appeared before a Kenyan court, which had previously blocked the development of the tented facility near the central town of Nanyuki. The proposed site has been the subject of deadly protests.
The facility is intended to house American personnel who may have been exposed to Ebola during the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has now recorded over 1,000 cases.
Despite the courts earlier injunctions, satellite imagery from 22 June revealed significant progress in construction, including an increase in tents, paved areas, and structures resembling containers, compared to earlier images from the month.
