Massive measles outbreak in Virginia county continues to grow, nearly 90 cases reported

BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) The massive measles outbreak in Buckingham County, Virginia, continues to grow, nearing 90 confirmed cases. State health officials are asking anyone who may be sick or who is not vaccinated to avoid large gatherings.
Measles, a highly infectious and potentially serious disease, has been on the rise across America, with the nation seeing a historic uptick in cases. As of Thursday, June 11, Virginia has seen 111 confirmed cases of measles during the first half of 2026, according to the Virginia Department of Healths (VDH) measles dashboard.

State health officials credit this sharp rise in cases to increased travel-related exposures, both international and domestic, and declining national vaccination rates. While Virginia has overall high vaccination rates against measles, some communities within Virginia may have lower vaccination rates, making them more susceptible to measles outbreaks, the VDH said.

(22,965 posts)Vaccination mandates, like we use to have, are hot, political touch points in the land of freedumb. Protecting people from their own stupidity, and even the repercussions of that stupidity on others, is frowned upon by many Amurkins. Like we say about our redheaded stepchild up here in New England, i.e. NH. We say their state motto isn't "live free or die", it's "live free AND die."

(22,965 posts)Before seeing Buckingham, my first thought was southwest VA. They voted for Donnie 75% plus. "We don't want them thar vaccines injectin' Democrat nanobots into our kids and a changin' their gender!"
Yes, they do believe incredibly stupid shit like that. And folks wonder why we seem to have turned our backs on them. Normally I'd say let them stew in their own misery if it weren't for the fact of innocent people in those communities and communicable disease knows no political boundaries.

(4,290 posts)The county is in SW Virginia -- coal country, central Appalachia, mountainous terrain.
In 2024 voted over 60% for Trump.
SW VA is very conservative, Trump country. Occasionally someone pops up from this region suggesting that SW V should secede from VA and join West Virginia. WV doesn't want them.
2025 census estimate: 17,137
White: 64%
Black: 32%
Hispanic: 2.8%
Under poverty level: 18%
I was surpised that the county only went 61% for Trump, then, I noted the large black population -- that's where the votes for Harris came from. Most of SW VA went for Trump 70% - 80%.

(3,480 posts)I still think a big part of this problem, aside from the abject stupidity of these people (Dunning-Krugar, anyone?), is they never experienced how miserable these childhood diseases are because they were vaccinated. Wouldn't it be great if there was some way to make them experience all that? The fever, rashes, itching, coughing, body aches...all of it. Let's throw in a few cases of meningitis to keep it interesting for them. Then let them tell us childhood diseases are no big deal.
