Trump claims US fuel prices 'not very high' as costs surge amid Iran war

Source: The Guardian

Donald Trump has claimed US fuel prices are “not very high, relatively speaking” as his administration grapples with affordability concerns after the surge in costs sparked by his war on Iran.

The national average gas price stood at about $4.16 per gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA – $0.37 lower than a month ago, but still about $1 more expensive than the same time last year.

The US president has faced sustained frustration over the sharp rise in fuel costs since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran in late February. While he has repeatedly sought to downplay the increase in prices, it comes as voters prepare to cast their votes in November’s crucial US midterm elections.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday morning, Trump said the administration was releasing “a lot of oil coming out of the Hormuz strait”, one of the most crucial passageways for global trade through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes. The strait has been all but closed since the start of the war.

never once pumped gas into a vehicle. He has no idea the cost and what a burden it is for people or trucking industry or even the food industry. My trash collector is putting a gas surcharge on my bill the last couple of years.

Huge release of our Strategic Oil Supply? Surely its not because the oil companies are still falling for trump's 'any day now' forecast?

A little help from Big Oil could put red and purple states in trump's pocket for the next election.

Propaganda loses its effect when it is in conflict with observable reality. At this point, it is counterproductive.

We’re falling out a 100 story building and just passed the 75th floor.

Every day that Hormuz is effectively closed is another day it will take to get things back to normal if and when it opens. Oil tankers can take weeks or months to reach ports. Folks who think oil works like a light switch are in for a rude awakening

When the proverbial SH-T hits the fan I hope our government will take the opportunity to clean house in the business world. Bailouts without any accountability or structural change won’t improve the situation. You’re just allowing the rats to hide out for a bit before they return with a vengeance.
