Trump Chill Hits World Cup Demand as Panicked Hotels Slash Rates

Source: daily beast

TRUMP SLUMP
FIFA has canceled thousands of reserved rooms in host cities across the country.

Isabel van Brugen Apr. 15 2026 12:16PM EDT

Panicked U.S. hotels are slashing room rates for the World Cup amid a demand shortfall, exacerbated by what executives believe is being driven by a surge in anti-American sentiment.

Industry executives had hopes that FIFA’s World Cup would revive last year’s slump in travel to the country. Last year, FIFA projected that millions of international visitors would give the U.S. a $30.5 billion economic boost.

But that demand hasn’t materialized, forcing FIFA to begin cancelling tens of thousands of reserved rooms in host cities across the country. Eleven U.S. cities will be hosting matches during the World Cup, scheduled from June 11 through July 19.

As one article points out--folks are hesitant crossing the USA border!!

I hope the athletes at least have roaring crowds.

Just parking can cost anywhere from $80 to as much as $300...just to park.

The face value of tickets for the final is over $10,000.

All this grift is going to blow up in their faces. There is zero doubt in my mind.

To me it is a boring sport to watch. Curling is even more exciting to watch than soccer.

I wouldn't go to a World Cup game if the ticket was free and they would send a limousine to pick me up at my house and take me to the game.

However, I understand there are many other people that love the game.

I feel the same way about baseball. It's all about what you like and sometimes where you grew up. We are a hardcore soccer family and were incredibly excited to have the world cup here only to be crushed by the costs involved. Way out of reach for anyone in our family. So despite actually living in a town hosting matches (Seattle) we will be watching it on TV like everyone else (honestly I'm surprised they haven't made every match a pay per view and I have no doubt they considered it).

No foreigner should come to the U.S. for any of the FIFA games here in the U.S. Including the Team Members.

Soccer authorities tell us, that FIFA is the SECOND most corrupt organization, in the ENTIRE WORLD, with Trump & Republicans in first place....

And that is why FIFA loves Trump, and Trump loves FIFA.........

are trying to catch up to FIFA........just look at who owns the Denver Broncos, The Denver Nuggets, A big chunk of the Colorado Rockies, and either the Pro soccer or Pro Lacrosse team here.......

If it wasn't bad enough, just look at what is happening with all the sports betting, which is truly the kiss of death to Professional and Collegiate Sports across the U.S. There is a fortune to be made by refs, players, coaches, and the sports betting corporations by throwing games, or shaving points......
When I was a kid, we knew the Prize Fighting was controlled by the Mafia as far as who would win....Now it appears that it will be all the professional sports and collegiate sports teams also.
The NCAA just caught 19 NCAA basketball players throwing games.....they were paid 30,000, PER GAME, to throw individual games........They are also nailing Pro Football Refs and Pro Hockey Refs for their Calls or Non-calls.........

I watch Pro Hockey games, and am appalled at the calls/non-calls on certain players/teams that affect the outcome of the game.

There isn't a single sport now that is untouched by gambling, and the crassness of the money culture that matters more than the "Game".

This has been going on in a very limited amount for decades.......After the Stanley Cup in 96? or 97? the NHL did a pretty good job of the League and owners covering up the NHL firing of the TOP five officials who had reffed the Stanley Cup games that year........

LIV — I forget what the initials stand for but that’s not important.

LIV was formed 4(?) years ago as a pro golf association that would rival the PGA, holding tournaments (at golf resorts owned by you know who) and certifying pro players. A few mostly lower ranked US pros played in some of the first tournaments then they went back to the US PGA.

Now the golf world is awash in reports that LIV is poised to disappear as the Saudis say they are moving their public investment fund into things that are profitable.

So now Trump Golf goes the way of Trump Steaks, Trump University, Trump Water, . . . .

They only play 54 holes in each tournament not the standard 72.

I didn’t realize that until about a year ago when someone pointed it out on TV.

training center , and the disgusting museum I see every time I am downtown, there is no forgetting. And that includes the bribe a previous mayor saddled us with (without even asking us!) to get that museum here. As a side note, there was also mitt romney and the very questionble SLC olympics.

DU posters have been saying it for over a year ... move these World Cup events to Canada and Mexico. It's not safe for the athletes, their families or their fans to come here. The stands will be only half full, as long as the American teams are still playing. Once they lose they are out, it will be only foreign teams playing and Americans won't pay these ridiculous ticket prices to watch them.

A tournament that’s been hosted by all manner of despots, fascists, and villains was never joyless. The joy has always been FIFA’s secret sauce. This is the first time there will be a joyless World Cup. Everything he touches….

Allow me to enlighten you on what comes next. Not that everyone wasn't saying this a year ago when you were being begged to move the event, but its probably worth a refresh since you could only see $$$ and weren't listening.

1. Your event is going to bring in a fraction of the cash you were banking on. May even be upside down once out of pocket is accounted for.

2. Your athletes are going to be harassed, possibly to the point of needing international intervention. Great look.

3. Even if they do get through the ICE gestapo without being tossed in a holding cell, they will be playing to a skeleton audience. Its one thing to get them through the gauntlet - but what about their home fans that are coming to see them play? Great morale booster.

4. And when its all over, you could walk him to mid-pitch, crown him FIFA 'king' - complete with a robe and sepulcher - and he is STILL going to throw you under the bus for a less-than-successful venture. trump doesn't do 'embarassed', he does 'blame'.

So CONGRATS!

You shed your dignity for over a year to risk the safety and welfare of your athletes and fans, reap financial disaster and have your dignity shredded with ridicule.

I am sorry for the Athletes who have the devil's choce of whether to come at risk or miss their window for success. I will forever be supremely angry about our idiotic boycott of the 1980 olympics. I am biased as my hometown peer Carl Lewis missed a crucial window in his late teens from that stupid decision.
