Tillis won't support Fed nominee confirmation before DOJ investigation of Powell is done

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) reiterated Sunday that he will not support Kevin Warsh, President Trump’s nominee to chair the Federal Reserve, until the Department of Justice (DOJ) concludes its probe into Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

“I’ve tried to make it very clear that I have no intention of supporting any confirmation of any Fed board member, chair or otherwise … until this is resolved,” Tillis told host Ed O’Keefe on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.”

Tillis, who sits on the Senate Banking Committee, has repeatedly criticized the DOJ’s investigation into Powell over the cost of the renovation of two Fed buildings in Washington, D.C. Upon the opening of the DOJ’s inquiry into the central bank last month, Tillis said he would oppose any of Trump’s Fed nominees until the investigation concluded, arguing it threatened the central bank’s independence.

Late last month, Trump announced Warsh as his nominee to succeed Powell — whose term expires in May. The president has consistently criticized the central bank chair, whom he nominated during his first term, for not backing an earlier or larger interest rate cut.
