GOP, Democratic lawmakers to travel to Denmark to discuss Greenland

Source: The Hill

01/12/26 5:15 PM ET

A bipartisan group of lawmakers will travel to Denmark in the wake of a recent push by President Trump to acquire Greenland, which is a Danish territory.

The group includes Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), as well as Reps. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.) and Sara Jacobs (D-Calif.), according to a report from Hannah Brant and Joe Khalil of NewsNation, The Hill’s sister station.

Several of the senators have been unnerved by recent statements from admistration officials about taking Greenland by force. The remarks have also unsettled officials in Greenland and Denmark, as well as other European capitols.

The president’s threats targeting Greenland came into the spotlight again following the American operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Trump has often discussed acquiring Greenland, which has many mineral resources and a strategic location that could boost American national security. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday said that there was not a “timeline” for the U.S. to take over Greenland.

As soon as the Democrats start trying to smooth things over, the MAGA bunch will just start screaming and demanding.

They are spoiled children. Why are spoiled children going on a diplomatic visit?

I also question the Democrats who felt they should go, even as I understand that they want to keep an eye on the children.

The best thing is to not bring the children. If the freaking MAGA reps can travel to other countries to stir up trouble for a Democratic president, I say the show fits on the other foot. Send a delegation of Democrats only to explain what is going on and what is being done about it. (Assuming there is something being done about it.)

Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) - and particularly Tillis, who is not running again, have bucked 45.

Tillis was the one who said he would be blocking ALL Fed nominees after the Powell investigation was announced for example, and Murkowski gave an almost 30 minute speech trashing 45 about "taking Greenland" -

Murkowski warns Trump: Taking Greenland would be ‘a colossal mistake’

What happens thanks to the media (that we do NOT OWN, as I repeat over and over and over and over again) - if you have all one party (and particularly Democrats) doing "events" like this, then they will dub it "partisan" (in a negative sense). And we should normally NOT care about that but it starts up a narrative. If you have at least "one" of another party, you can call it "bipartisan" and catch the attention of the independent voters, who are an increasing share of the electorate. Unfortunately, we can't win without them.

The (D)s who are going per the OP are -

Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) - all Senate, and Reps. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.) and Sara Jacobs (D-Calif.) - those latter in the House.

As a note, Madeleine Dean is the rep for one of my sisters and my niece participated in a summer program sponsored by her. She also served as one of the Impeachment Managers for 45's 2nd Impeachment.

I've come to think some of this is good ole extortion at this point.

These lawmakers ae going to convince Denmark to throw a bone to Trump (I don't know, land for military, mining rights, something). Total corruption. Line Trump's wallet...to make this talk "go away" for the time being.

Whatever they are going for, I don’t think it’s to make the takeover easier.

Commenters are so quick to judge. In these times, absent specific information, perhaps it makes sense to wait and see.

I'm sure they are making the trip to let Greenland know not everybody supports this stance. It's important they know this publicly for our futures. It's possible they have bipartisan signed commitments?

On this fourth day of July, we who are gathered , entrusted with the fate and future of our States and Nation, declare now our vow to do our part to lift the weights from the shoulders of all, to join other men and nations in preserving both peace and freedom, and to regard any threat to the peace or freedom of one as a threat to the peace and freedom of all.

John F. Kennedy
