Trump announces 'Most Favored Nation' deals with nine drug companies and plans to meet with insurers next

In his latest effort to lower drug costs, President Donald Trump unveiled Friday “Most Favored Nation” pricing deals with nine more pharmaceutical companies.

The president also announced he would call a meeting next week or early January with health insurers to push them to lower their premiums. The move comes as Trump and Republicans are scrambling to deal with steeply rising health insurance costs, particularly on the Affordable Care Act exchanges as enhanced premium subsidies are set to expire at year’s end.

“I’m going to call in the insurance companies that are making so much money, and they have to make less – a lot less,” said Trump, who repeated his call that the federal government should give money directly to Americans to purchase coverage, instead of subsidizing insurers. “Maybe we can have reasonable health care without having to cut them out.”

A main insurance industry group said that premiums reflect “the underlying cost of medical care, plus a modest, regulated risk margin.”

is decided by the corporations that run the hospitals, pharmacies, and health insurance plans.

They collude to keep the price of care and drugs so high that one needs insurance to cover the costs, and then they raise the price of the insurance.

Insurance does not equal healthcare.
