Brown mass shooting and MIT professor murder may be linked: Sources

Source: ABC News

December 18, 2025, 2:52 PM

The mass shooting at Brown University and the murder of an MIT professor in Brookline, Massachusetts, may be linked, multiple sources briefed on the investigation told ABC News.

The information about a possible connection between the two incidents was developed in the last 24 hours as detectives working on both cases compared notes, the sources said. The sources also said investigators believe they are close to identifying a suspect.

On Saturday afternoon, two Brown students were killed and nine others were injured in a mass shooting on the Rhode Island campus. The gunman fled the scene and has not been identified.

On Monday night, MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro was found shot at his home in the upscale Boston suburb of Brookline, officials said. Loureiro, 47, died on Tuesday at the hospital.

The vibe of that logo seems suspect all by itself.

He usually covers the biggest stuff like hurricane's, earthquakes, big stories.

I go there when I can find nothing on local or national news, especially at night or on weekends.

Agenda Free is just that. Steve runs this alone and is extremely careful to be accurate and honest. He's a bit of an odd duck but is terrific for true straight coverage of big news events.

Live Updates: Authorities Search for a New Person of Interest in the Shooting at Brown

Investigators are also examining a possible connection between last weekend’s attack, which killed two and injured nine others, and the killing of an M.I.T. professor earlier this week

Here’s the latest.

The authorities on Thursday identified a person of interest in the shooting at Brown University last weekend and are investigating whether there was a connection to the killing earlier this week of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, according to two people briefed on the matter who were not authorized to speak about the investigation.

Investigators are searching for the individual and a car that the person is believed to have rented, one official said. The authorities have not publicly identified a suspect in either case. Investigators believe the rented vehicle is the same make and model of a car identified in connection with the shooting Monday night of the M.I.T. professor in Brookline, Mass., the official said.

Last Saturday, a masked gunman dressed in black burst into a lecture hall in the Barus and Holley science building at Brown and fired at students who had gathered for a review session before final exams. Two students were killed, and nine others were injured.

On Monday night, the authorities in Brookline were called to the home of the M.I.T. professor, Nuno F.G. Loureiro, who had been shot. He was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning. Ted Docks, the special agent in charge of the F.B.I. in Boston, initially said there seemed to be “no connection” between the attack at Brown and Dr. Loureiro’s death.
