Thousands of carveouts and caveats are weakening Trump's emergency tariffs

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump promised that a wave of emergency tariffs on nearly every nation would restore “fair” trade and jump-start the economy. Eight months later, half of U.S. imports are avoiding those tariffs.

“To all of the foreign presidents, prime ministers, kings, queens, ambassadors, and everyone else who will soon be calling to ask for exemptions from these tariffs,” Trump said in April when he rolled out global tariffs based on the United States’ trade deficits with other countries, “I say, terminate your own tariffs, drop your barriers, don’t manipulate your currencies.”

But in the time since the president gave that Rose Garden speech announcing the highest tariffs in a century, enormous holes have appeared. Carveouts for specific products, trade deals with major allies and conflicting import duties have let more than half of all imports escape his sweeping emergency tariffs.

Some $1.6 trillion in annual imports are subject to the tariffs, while at least $1.7 trillion are excluded, either because they are duty-free or subject to another tariff, according to a POLITICO analysis based on last year’s import data. The exemptions on thousands of goods could undercut Trump’s effort to protect American manufacturing, shrink the trade deficit and raise new revenue to fund his domestic agenda.

OH PLEASE, Politico. It’s a giant extortion racket and the carveouts and trade deals went to those who have given the person wielding the cudgel something he wanted.

They are in fact, the reason for tariffs in the first place. (IMNSHO)

because of exemptions, etc., are STILL being priced higher to us and tariffs blamed for the rise in cost! It's nothing but a racket of greed for big corporations. They have shelter to hide their price increases as long as they pay a little off the top to the trump family!

We aren’t getting a rebate check as promised ?

Working Americans will soon get ‘very large refunds’ of up to $2,000/household, says Bessent
Working Americans will soon see a sizable financial boost — all thanks to changes tied to President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Speaking with a reporter in Pennsylvania on Dec. 10, Bessent said an estimated $100 billion to $150 billion in tax refunds could hit bank accounts in the first quarter of 2026.

Eventually, it will be another train-wreck. It is ironic that the Republican Party, after many decades of a laissez faire approach in reaction to "Dreaded Socialism" with its centrally managed economics, is willing to trust one person to manage the economy.

since it should be Congress that sets non-emergency tariffs.

And we can see why that is a rule that should have been stuck to - the personal bribery involved in Trump altering tariffs on each country should be impossible with Congress making the decisions.

Like Rachel Maddow pointed out months ago, all these tariffs are opportunities for trump to sell exemptions and favors for his private profit.
