More New York Democrats coalesce behind Zohran Mamdani, but key holdouts remain

New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani scored endorsements this week from key members of the state party establishment, but hes still waiting on two of the biggest names from his city.
This week, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and state Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie announced their endorsements of Mamdani, giving him the backing of two of the states most powerful Democrats. But others, particularly congressional leaders such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, are still keeping some distance.
The split screen reflects the different political cross-pressures facing those state and federal figures. It also shows how the Democratic Partys leaders havent fully settled on how much to embrace the energy bubbling up among progressives in New York City and elsewhere, after Mamdani scored an upset victory in the June Democratic mayoral primary over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is pressing on with a third-party bid for mayor.
Its clear that Mamdanis candidacy is something that a lot more of the establishment Democrats have had a tough time wrestling with, because its a movement of a lot of people that a lot of institutional Democrats didnt see coming, and is also coming at a time when the party, both locally and nationally, is wrestling with what it looks like to move to the next generation of political leadership, said Basil Smikle, a longtime Democratic strategist who previously served as the executive director of the New York State Democratic Party.

(4,886 posts)A republican, and whether it is those on the left or middle of the party the important thing is that each side bury the hatchet and just vote Democratic in the midterms or special election, regardless if we dont agree on on every issue of a particular candidate as long as they run as a Democrat, or we wont have to wait if our democracy survives by 2028, our democracy wont survive if we dont capture at least one House in Congress.
We are in defcon 4. This is our last chance. We blew it in 2016 and 2024. We wont have another chance if we dont win at least one House in the midterms.

(68,885 posts)So are all the other highly paid Democratic strategists "who didn't see this movement coming."
Wake up and smell the coffee. The DNC needs to fire all the old guard strategists and hire people who know what they're doing.
These people couldn't strategize themselves out of a paper bag.
