President Donald Trump will announce new tariffs on auto imports Wednesday, the White House said. Trump will unveil the new tariffs during a press conference in the Oval Office at 4 p.m. ET, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Trump on Monday had hinted that the auto tariffs could arrive prior to April 2, the day his sweeping “reciprocal tariff” plan is set to begin. “We’ll be announcing that fairly soon over the next few days, probably, and then April 2 comes, that’ll be reciprocal tariffs,” he said at a Cabinet meeting.
Trump has long signaled his plans to impose heavy tariffs on foreign trading partners. But his unpredictable and frequently shifting policy rollouts have stirred turmoil in the stock market and left business leaders uncertain about how to plan for the future.
Trump has hyped April 2 as “liberation day” and “the big one.” His plan, as originally described, would slap reciprocal tariffs on all countries that have their own import duties on U.S. goods, while also imposing tariffs in response to other disfavored trade policies, such as the use of value-added taxes. But Trump and his officials have recently suggested that the tariffs coming April 2 could end up being softer than they first appeared.

Most of the rest of the world uses some kind of "VAT" tax to fund stuff.

(52,038 posts)There's another word they use now, but when I lived there it was called Mehrwertsteuer or MwST. It was already added into the price of the item, so if you bought an item with a DM25 price tag you paid DM25. None of this "we charge taxes separately so you can get mad at the government" shit they do in the US.
Basically, it's a federal sales tax. I can only assume it was divided between the federal government and the state, but that's how they do it there. And they didn't fall into the "we can replace income tax with sales tax" lie that the "FairTax" people want to try - not only does Germany have an income tax they are not shy about charging it.

(149,651 posts)I think the "itemization" that we do here was demanded by consumer advocates as our companies have a propensity for price gouging. And then there were the "junk fees" (that Biden, at the behest of Warren, et al) that needed to be spelled out and the companies shamed into removing.
