Major League Baseball (MLB) is the latest organization to bend after President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. On Friday, the MLB announced the removal of all “diversity” references from its careers page.
“Our values on diversity remain unchanged,” MLB said in a statement to The New York Times, saying it was in the process of “evaluating our programs” to ensure they are “compliant with federal law.” As of Saturday, the tab on the far right of the MLB home page reads “inclusion” rather than “diversity and inclusion.”
Trump signed the DEI order only two days into his term, promising to reinstate “colorblind equality.” He has enforced his demands to end “illegal DEI” across the federal government and has also threatened to cut off government funding to states and organizations with DEI programs.
Although the MLB doesn’t receive direct funding from the federal government, many teams benefit from indirect government support, such as tax-free stadium construction. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred last month that although the organization values diversity, it would “try to comply with what the law is.” “There seems to be an evolution going on here,” Manfred said. “We’re following that very carefully.”

An "Executive Order" is NOT a "law". It is a notice of guidance specifically directed to Executive Branch agencies on how to carry out an existing law, and this lawless administration has fabricated, distorted, and outright igored, WHAT the actual laws are.
Just last year, after over a century of banning and ignoring their players, the MLB *finally* incorporated the Negro League stats into their own. I guess that was too much for some racist fucks.
The MLB is going to be in for a rude awakening when much of their baseball farm recruits end up deported (and that might include those from Japan too if they piss 45 off). I.e., those special visas will be nullified.

(13,262 posts)Hispanic players represent a significant portion of the league, accounting for 30.2% of players. The Dominican Republic has the most MLB players after the United States. Venezuela and Cuba also have a notable presence in the MLB. In 2024, nearly 28% of Opening Day rosters featured players born outside the United States, spanning 19 countries and territories."
ICE will be checking them all for gang tattoos.

This is embarrassing and beneath contempt on MLBs part.
Gross.
This isn't even the dreaded "complying in advance." It's complying even when there is no reason to do so. Fucking bozos.

Talent knows no nationality. MLB should be ashamed for bending to tRump's demands.

(2,154 posts)Yes, the players in baseball are a diverse bunch. Teams have embraced that because they would be missing out on great talent if they didn’t.
The real issue will be how team owners and front offices hire staff. Until diversity policy came into being, staffing was almost exclusively white men. Now we have black and Hispanic managers and staffing, even a few women on coaching staffs and in the broadcast booth (yes, most of those folks are team hires, too). Minorities were nearly or completely absent from those jobs, not too many years ago.
Team owners are largely old white men (although a few teams have ownership groups that may include a minority or two). Without a diversity policy, they will be free to going back to hiring mostly white men.
It’s no surprise that MLB has willingly eliminated their diversity policy, since that policy is directed by those old white guys who were basically forced to adopt diversity policy some years ago. Their statement that they will continue their diversity policy, even it is now officially “off the books”, is just lip service to try and make themselves look good.

(149,420 posts)No one missed that.
Jesse Jackson spent DECADES going after the major sports leagues battling not only the lack of players, but obviously the lack of coaches and front office staff.
So for example, his arduous efforts of pounding against the NFL finally resulted in the "odd concept" of having black quarterbacks and black head coaches. The one big league that has yet to be breached is the NHL (and even there, probably half the players are either Canadian, Russian, or from some Eastern European country).
At some point, these leagues will have to make a decision about whether it is worth the cave and loss of revenue or what.
As it is, the MLB seemed to have already done their own thing by not developing a "farm" system here, effectively avoiding black (American) players all on their own, and instead have been pulling players from outside the U.S. from the Caribbean. Here in Philly, the days of having another Jimmy Rollins are seemingly gone.

(2,154 posts)Except all the replies that focus on diversity of players. There’s not a single mention in this entire thread, before I brought it up, about the diversity of club staffing: managers, coaches, scouts etc.
Re: the lack of black American players, the main problem there is that there are very few young black Americans playing baseball, and consequently very little black American talent available for pro baseball now. The young black athletes mostly seem to be gravitating toward basketball and football, at least that’s how it seems to me.
But what do I know? I’m just a casual baseball fan. Go Brewers!

(149,420 posts)so to me, the hiring of any type of staff being implied is a "given".
The front office staffing has ALWAYS been the last barrier to breach and it is STILL not there yet in the MLB (with 3 who are in managing positions).
Right now about the only leagues that even have such to some degree is the NBA (15) and NFL (now down to 4 from 6), and the player rosters actually establish the reason why.

(18,041 posts)... but from the asinine comment by the Commissioner, it is clearly not a matter of leverage. Either he is incredibly stupid, or incredibly bigoted, not that the two are mutually exclusive. That statement is such a feeble attempt at disingenuousness as to be transparently bogus.
