Republican congressman suggests some children receiving free school lunches should work at McDonald's instead

Source: NBC

Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., on Tuesday defended the impacts of the White House's federal aid freeze on school lunch programs by suggesting that some children should be working instead of receiving free lunch.

During an interview on CNN, McCormick praised the move as a way to broadly re-evaluate how the government allocates funding. CNN anchor Pamela Brown noted that Head Start, which helps provide nutritional assistance to low-income children and families, is one of the programs that could be affected. She pressed McCormick on whether he would support cutting funding for free breakfast and lunches.

"Before I was even 13 years old, I was picking berries in the field, before child labor laws that precluded that. I was a paper boy, and when I was in high school, I worked my entire way through," McCormick said. "You’re telling me that kids who stay at home instead of going to work at Burger King, McDonald’s, during the summer, should stay at home and get their free lunch instead of going to work? I think we need to have a top-down review."

McCormick, who was speaking from Doral, Florida, where House Republicans are holding their annual issues conference, said that the pause on federal funds gives the government a chance to "see where is the money really being spent."

So a 7 year old child should go work at McDonalds instead of getting free school lunches? This is beyond insane.

RICH MCCORMICK ADDRESSES MAJORIE TAYLOR GREENE ALTERCATION: "I BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF TOUCH"
By Rey Harris

Washington DC - Congressman Rich McCormick has apologized for a recent incident that took place with Marjorie Taylor Greene, which she described as "physically aggressive."

Representative Rich McCormick apologized after his colleague Marjorie Taylor Greene alleged he got "physically aggressive" with her during a dispute.

Earlier this month, CNN reported that Greene told House Speaker Mike Johnson in private that McCormick "grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her" during a dispute over their competing resolutions.

"I had a disappointing conversation with somebody else. [Then] I came up to her, I placed my hands on her shoulder and said, 'At least you and I can have an honest conversation,'" he explained. "That's all I said."

He went on to argue that physical contact is pretty common between him and many of his colleagues in the House, where he says, "Everybody touches everybody."

Who is Beth Van Duyne? The Texas GOP Rep, 53, 'seen holding hands under the table' with Georgia Republican Rich McCormick - as he files for divorce from oncologist wife
Georgia Republican representative rumored to be dating Texas representative

By JAMES REYNOLDS
PUBLISHED: 07:04 EST, 17 May 2024 | UPDATED: 07:47 EST, 17 May 2024

Georgia Republican Rep. Rich McCormick filed for divorce from his wife this month, requesting a mutual restraining order and leading to a flurry of speculation from peers.

His wife of 12 years, oncologist Debra Miller, only told DailyMail.com that she was 'sure that he will not be forthcoming' when approached about the cause of the relationship's breakdown.

But Capitol Hill insiders have said they saw McCormick, 55, 'holding hands under the table' with female Republican member of the House Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas.

A source added that they had seen him 'grab the small of her back' on the House floor during votes.

With the two rumored to have been an item since at least January, Rich McCormick's followers may now be asking: who is Beth Van Duyne?

I grew up in the early 80's. I'm talking about those jobs now.

Working at McDonalds? You have to have a work permit if you are under 18. Although, in some states they can use child labor. But, do you want a 13-year-old operating a deep fryer?

Paper boy - Yeah. Maybe in the 80's. Nowadays, the only person I know of who gets a dead tree paper is my 84-year-old aunt.

Babysitting - This may still be valid. But most parents take their kids with them to the movies or dinner these days, where they act up and make everyone miserable.

And he was also cheating on wife #2.

... in Houston Tx in 1977. I was 12 and spent two hours a day after school emptying garbage cans all around my junior high for $5/hr which was very good at the time. Then I took city busses for another two hours to get home around 7pm every night. I did not last long as it negatively impacted my grades.

I was also on free lunches at the time as my family was poor. The free meals were much more important for my long-term success than the after-school job. I have been a professor for 25+ years now.

Education is the only real way out of poverty for most people. And hungry kids don't learn.

It is difficult to get the workers to the locations of the available jobs. I think 12 is really too young to be doing janitorial work, but I could see high schoolers doing work instead of extracurriculars so long as that sacrifice is recognized in scholarship and admission criteria.

It is immoral to withhold food to children.

...he has represented Georgia in the United States House of Representatives since 2023.[2] Until 2025, he represented the 6th congressional district, the wealthiest in Georgia.

Yeah, another rich prick with zero understanding about how life works outside of a wealth bubble. Our government is no longer 'of, by, and for the people', it is 'of, by, and for the wealthy'.

I am wondering why we are still bringing a toy rubber mallet to a gun fight. These traitors are in this for real and it seems to me as if most of the Democrats are preferring to play an outdated game. There is no going back. I don't want things to 'go back'. What was 'back' was what allowed this asshat to happen in the first place. The current system is too rigged and too corrupted.

If he picked berries, he probably did it like me (picking peas, beans, etc) out of my parent's garden when I was five.

Or he did it at a family friend's farm more like a dilettante than like a migrant who is doing it to survive under the supervision of demanding and generally uncaring field owners.

I do think it is valuable to work when growing up, but working for the uncaring beast of the corporation is a whole lot different than working for family or family friends. There is a big reason for labor laws.

One thing that definitely should happen is that working should count as much or even more than extracurriculars (especially expensive extracurriculars) for scholarships and college admittance.

To withhold food to children because they don't work is immoral. You need to work on the incentive side, not on the punitive side.
