170 House Republicans Defied Donald Trump Despite Primaries Threat

On Friday 170 House Republicans joined Democrats to approve an emergency funding bill just hours before a partial government shutdown was due to go into effect, despite President-elect Donald Trump's threat to oust any rebels.

In a post on his Truth Social website before the vote the incoming president said the move would simply "bring the mess of the Debt Limit into the Trump Administration" and said any Republicans that support it "should, and will, be Primaried." Trump had called for the federal debt ceiling to be removed or extended to 2029, neither of which featured in Friday's legislation. Newsweek contacted Donald Trump's 2024 presidential transition team for comment via email on Saturday outside of regular office hours.

Why It Matters

Friday's continuing resolution to temporarily extend government spending prevented an imminent government shutdown, which had been due to begin on Saturday. The bill passed the House by 366 votes against 34, and the Senate with 85 votes versus 11.

The recent spat over government funding has seen a significant number of House Republicans defy the incoming president, with 38 Republican rebels on Thursday joining Democrats to vote down a Trump backed funding plan which would also have suspended the debt ceiling.

House Republicans were willing to toe the Trump line when they killed the immigration bill during the campaign. But not when Musk's name and fingerprints were all over the budget bill.

My Congressman Dwight Evans is on that list (he had a stroke this past spring) and Raul Grijalva had been undergoing cancer treatments.

A couple on there look like it was done "on principle" like Ted Lieu and Jasmine Crockett (who voted "present" ). Most of the rest were GOPers.

That said, it’s a rare rational decision for the Congressional Republicans for a few reasons…

- It’s a long way to the primaries. There’s many fresh Hells to come.
- Finding a viable more MAGAty challenger in many of these gerrymandered districts would be problematic and expensive. Aside from all of the hype, Trump’s crusades of primary-ing have a very low success rate.
- Incumbents are incumbents.

There’s a part of my thinking that what’s behind all of this is setting the stage for Musk to be installed as the SOTH. (That’s Speaker of the House for the acronym adjacent.)

Given the negative impact of his economic policies once enacted, they see his popularity and influence waning, likely sooner than later. And I sense that they are not too keen on having a whacked out foreign-born zillionaire pulling on Dear Leader's puppet strings. So best putting them both in their "proper" place here and now. The "primary" threat will not be what it once wa with a hapless lame duck in office. GOP lifeboats at the ready, hoping not to go down with a sinking MAGA ship. I sure wish the rest of us might also escape unscathed.

that a lot of American are extraordinarily pissed. Sometimes pissed at the right people,. Many times not. But given what billionaires have done to them in so many ways the last 40 years, they have every right to be pissed. They were pissed at us recently, in my mind partially because we failed to take credit loudly enough to overcome the rightwing, propaganda machine on the positive things were were doing. Biden is low key. That's his style. Wrong style for the times. We couldn't or wouldn't offset the Repuke lies with shouted truth.

That rage is still seething and if Donny doesn't perform as advertised, which he won't, many will turn on him like rabid dogs. Way worse than 2018 and 2020. If he spikes unemployment with a policy driven recession (Elmo and Chaiwalla stupid shit), it's going to get ugly. We need to tap into that rage. Harness it. Tough order given where we are right now as a party, but if we can accomplish it, we may well end up with enough clout to do things like the OP mentioned.
