The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be investigating the presence of forever chemicals in seafood, with the goal of understanding how such contamination contributes to dietary exposures and public health.
The FDA has issued a request for information seeking scientific data on concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in seafood, the surrounding environment and processing water. The agency also said it would be looking for mitigation strategies for decreasing exposure to the compounds in this food supply.
Known for their ability to persist in the human body and the environment, PFAS have been linked to a variety of serious illnesses, including thyroid disease, kidney cancer and testicular cancer. Many of these substances of which there are thousands have entered drinking water systems and food supplies due to their ubiquitous presence in waste streams and common household products.
Addressing potential effects of Americans PFAS exposure is a national priority and is coordinated across several federal agencies, the FDA said in a statement. Through these interagency collaborations, we are working to identify routes of PFAS exposure, understand associated health risks, and reduce the publics dietary exposure to PFAS that may pose health concerns, the agency added.

(9,265 posts)Especially albacore. I will not eat tuna.
The organization tested five brands of tuna to check mercury levels. Consumer Reports (CR) tested Bumble Bee, Chicken of the Sea, Starkist, Safe Catch and Wild Planet in cans. Pouch containers have the same kind of tuna as cans, but pouches were not tested.
There was a wide range of mercury levels between types light and albacore and brands. Albacore had higher levels of mercury in all brands, not surprisingly because the fish are larger, according to CR.
The researchers found that regardless of brand or type, mercury levels can spike from can to can, therefore making it inadvisable for pregnant women to eat the fish. Mercury is a known neurotoxin and can cause many problems with a developing fetus.
On average, the albacore tuna had three times more mercury than the light tuna, though there was a wide range in brands. Chicken of the Sea albacore, for example, had 10 times the mercury than its light tuna did. Wild Planets were very close together, and either should be eaten only once per week, according to the researchers.

Recalls are a good thing. Dismantling of the food safety agencies is not a good thing.
