Former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is Trump's pick for director of national intelligence

Tulsi Gabbard -- a military veteran and honorary co-chair of President-elect Donald Trump's transition team -- has been chosen by Trump to be his director of national intelligence.
Gabbard left the Democratic Party in 2022 after representing Hawaii in Congress for eight years and running for the party's 2020 presidential nomination. She was seen as an unusual ally with the Trump campaign, emerging as an adviser during his prep for his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, who Gabbard had debated in 2020 Democratic primaries.
"For over two decades, Tulsi has fought for our Country and the Freedoms of all Americans. As a former Candidate for the Democrat Presidential Nomination, she has broad support in both Parties - She is now a proud Republican!" Trump said in a statement announcing his pick, which will need to be confirmed by the Senate.
Gabbard recently said it would be a "honor" to serve in a Trump administration as she waited for Trump to make selections for his administration. "If there's a way I can help achieve the goal of preventing World War III and nuclear war? Of course," she said in an interview with NewsNation on Monday night.

(30,322 posts)CNN, 3/1/22, "Just as Russia was invading Ukraine last week, Gabbard sent out this decidedly pro-Russia tweet: This war and suffering could have easily been avoided if Biden Admin/NATO had simply acknowledged Russias legitimate security concerns regarding Ukraines becoming a member of NATO, which would mean US/NATO forces right on Russias border.
In 2019, Hillary Clinton said this of Gabbard, Im not making any predictions, but I think theyve got their eye on somebody who is currently in the Democratic primary and are grooming her to be the third-party candidate. Shes the favorite of the Russians.
This country is about to be destroyed from within.

(10,704 posts)It was classic overreach by a security state that's a lot more terrifying to me than anything Gabbard's likely to do.
A FOIA request and other official requests have been made to the TSA to explain why Gabbard was on a watchlist, and as far as I know, no reasonable response has been made; nor as far as I know has any other cogent explanation been proposed other than that she's been critical of the war policies of the Biden admin including Harris.

(154,538 posts)The article you posted from a local paper was amusing but ignores all of Tulsi's actions and statements made pushing Russian talking points and defending Putin. I trust the government on this issue and I also trust the fact that Russia and Russian TV thinks that Tulsi is their agent.

I am looking forward to the confirmation hearings on Tulsi and we will see what is disclosed. Senator Warren has some strong views on Tulsi

I also note that Tulsi is not competent to run the agencies.

Again, there will be confirmation hearings on Tulsi and those hearings will give her a chance to challenge this ruling.

(10,704 posts)does not make anyone a Russian asset, and that's all there's any actual evidence of her ever having done.
Gabbard sounds saner to me than most other politicians of any stripe, and unlike them, she's actually fought for her country. I think we owe our vets more than to call them traitors just because they view US involvement in foreign wars skeptically.

(9,269 posts)I used to like the old Dem Tulsi - having served in a medical unit in Iraq and working with all the injured American soldiers- she was turned off by war.
Now, although she is all for ending the war in Ukraine- she like RFK Jr has no problem with a genocide in Gaza.
Both of them were so anti war until they became pro war????
She doesnt scare me like Huckabee and Hegseft - crazed, way to the right -born again Christians. Creepy tattoos on Hegseft too.
What did Tulsi specifically do that people say she is a Russian asset? If she was a trader, I would think the military would have kicked her out.

Theres no question I consider her someone who is likely a Russian asset, Wasserman Schultz said on MSNBC on Friday.
The Hill has contacted Gabbards press team for comment.
Wasserman Schultzs comment comes as Trump has faced some pushback over some of his cabinet picks, including his nod toward Gabbard as director of national intelligence.
The role is a major shift for the former Democrat who has previously been accused of peddling Russian narratives. Gabbard has expressed beliefs that oppose the conclusions from U.S. intelligence, particularly when it comes to Russia and Ukraine.
Gabbard has shared content suggesting that the U.S. was involved in Ukraine developing biological weapons. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said at the time that she was parroting Russian propaganda and that her treasonous lies may well cost lives.
