Sexual orientation, gender ID on track to be on US Census Bureau survey by 2027

Questions about sexual orientation, gender identity and changes to queries about race and ethnicity are on track to be asked in the most comprehensive survey of American life by 2027, U.S. Census Bureau officials said Thursday.
The new or revised questions on the American Community Survey will show up on questionnaires and be asked by survey takers in as early as three years, with the data from those questions available the following year, officials told an advisory committee.
The American Community Survey is the most comprehensive survey of American life, covering commuting times, internet access, family life, income, education levels, disabilities and military service, among many other topics, with a sample size of more than 3.5 million households.
Some of the revised questions are the result of changes the federal government announced earlier this year about how it categorizes people by race and ethnicity. The changes were the first in 27 years and were aimed at better counting people who identify as Hispanic and of Middle Eastern and North African heritage.

(17,025 posts)If they ask me anything like that, I'm going to lie. It's so sad to say, but I don't think GLBTs are safe these days. We don't need to make it easy for the fascists to round us up.

(10,692 posts)Yep - I have started to remove anything that identifies my orientation from online. I dont trust the incoming administration at all. I will also not answer them on medical information moving forward.

(28 posts)it will be hilarious to see how America's GLBT population ebbs and grows depending on what the current dominate political philosophy is at the time

(4,305 posts)Skew the data and toss some glitter on the form, maybe after a light application from a glue stick.
Think of it like how the Danes, including the king, all turned out wearing a Star of David after the Nazis demanded all Jews in Denmark wore the Star.
And between now and then, let your LGBTQ+ friends know they have your love and support. If we do not hang together, we surly hang separately eventually. I think somebody wise and famous made that point a few years back.

(697 posts)All mentions of LGBTQ identities are going to be deleted from research and survey categories.
Sadly, this will have tragic and preventable consequences in terms of not only mental health outcomes, but the fight to end or at least extirpate HIV/AIDS --- which is currently within our grasp.
They will still, however, be able to access medical records, and will be able to see who is taking gender confirming hormones, PrEP, doxy-PEP, etc. So some of their draconian list-making can still go on.

(386 posts)They can still access all state marriage records and Social Security filings to see if you have a relationship with a same sex partner. It will be much easier to access these two records than medical records, I would bet.

(142,352 posts)But unfortunately what has happened, which is being reflected in almost every post in this thread, is that people are now thinking of "the government" as "the-gestapo-in-waiting" due to what happened with this election.

(142,352 posts)The past several decades, the LGBTQA+ community has fought to be "recognized" and with the Biden Administration listening to those calls, the Census Bureau was tasked to attempt to do that by finally providing some options to get someone's gender "right" (how individuals define it for themselves).
Now in the aftermath of this election and threats of "making lists", I can see how that would cause terror.

(119,931 posts)were generally asked a/s/l , standing for age, sex, and location, as a casual, non-required introduction. Many of us, being smartasses, had various smartass answers, such as: a- older than god, s- not nearly enough, and l-- wherever I want to be.
I am guessing that such answers will not be an option?

I think the original intent was to be "inclusive" because the Census DOES track various subjects by gender and the typical standard choice of "male" or "female' wasn't working for many in the LGBTQA+ community.
But now with a loon administration coming in, this brings about big concerns unfortunately.

(142,352 posts)but 45 was trying to get the "citizen" nonsense on the actual Census form and I think that was struck down by the courts.
