US elections 2024: control of House remains unclear

Source: The Guardian

Wed 6 Nov 2024 05.32 EST

Republicans have won a majority in the US Senate but control of the US House of Representatives remains unclear on Wednesday morning, with many of the most competitive races still uncalled.

With Donald Trump ahead in the electoral vote count, the stakes for control of the House have grown, since it could serve as either the sole Democratic check on a Trump presidency, or as the final Republican win that delivers a united pro-Trump government.

Republicans had made progress as the first results in the battle for the House were announced. By 7.30am ET, Republicans were ahead 198 to 180, according to the Associated Press. North Carolina Republicans had won three seats previously held by Democrats, while Democrats flipped seats in Alabama and New York.

The US may have to wait days to learn who won the House, given that it took more than a week to make that call in 2022.

Districts were redrawn in AL & LA and the AL one (AL-2) was called for the Democrat (a flip). The LA one (LA-6) hasn't been called yet but appears to be a flip as well, assuming it doesn't have to go to a runoff.

In addition, NY appears to have possibly flipped 3 seats (NY-4, NY-19, NY-22). CA seats are still being resolved.

We also know that what we’d feared for decades finally happened. An election was smoothly stolen right out from under us. Not a conspiracy. I’ve been dreading this since Bush v Gore.

Money bills must originate from the House (even if the Senate does one of those tricks of using a bill that had already passed there and was sent to the Senate for consideration, and then hollowing it out to use as an "Amendment as a Substitute" ), and there are many things that are under House purview.
