Trump Judge Deals Blow to Republicans in Election Case: No 'Facts'

A Trump-appointed judge blocked a last-minute bid from the Republican National Committee to challenge votes in Georgia's Democratic strongholds.

U.S. District Judge Stan Baker, who was nominated to the federal bench by then-President Donald Trump in 2017, threw out a claim from the RNC on Tuesday that accused Georgia counties of breaking the law by accepting about 2,000 absentee ballots over the weekend.

Baker said the plaintiffs were attempting to "tip the scales of this election by discriminating against [counties] less likely to vote for their candidate" and asked Republican lawyers not to "take us any closer to that ledge." "There's no supporting facts. There's no supporting law," Baker said. "That parade of horribles is factually and legally incorrect."

State and national Republicans filed the lawsuit against Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Athens-Clarke, Clayton and Chatham counties Sunday. They argue that because Georgia's early voting period ended on November 1, the seven counties violated state law by accepting hand-delivered ballots between November 2 and 4. State officials have said the practice was legal.
