NBC News aired a short video message from former President Trump on Sunday evening in an effort to provide the leading presidential candidates with equal air time after Vice President Harris made an appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL).
The network was broadcasting a NASCAR playoff race but toward the end of its broadcast, Trump looked into the camera and addressed the crowd in a recorded message.
The Hill has reached out to NBC News for more information, but the Hollywood Reporter noted that Trump said a Harris presidency would cause a depression and he encouraged people to vote.
A source familiar with the matter told the outlet that the appearance was related to providing Trump with equal time. The outlet noted that it was not clear if the Trump campaign requested the slot or if it was provided by NBC.

We were all curious about what Harris would do and say in comedy.

(35,697 posts)Chump gets at least a couple call-in interviews per week, whether he's running as a candidate or not. What has Fox News ever done for Kamala, or for any Democrats?
NBC should have told him that Saturday Night Live is not news, it's entertainment. He gets way more "free time" on their news broadcast than any Democrat, even Joe Biden. Chump's demand for "equal time" on NBC is just ludicrous. I can't believe they gave in to him.
I can't wait until this election is over and we're finally done with him.

(44,651 posts)It is intended primarily to ensure that an equal amount of reasonably priced advertising time is made available to competing candidates. It also applies to "free" appearances.
In fact, the reason it applied to SNL is because SNL is not a news program
NBC gave him the time because the law requires them to do so. So not "ludicrous." If you don't like the law, take it up with your elected member of Congresss since it is a statutory requirement. Although don't expect to get much headway since it has very broad Democratic party support.
Here is more information if you'd like to learn more about the "equal time" -- really "equal opportunities" rule: https://www.fcc.gov/sites/default/files/political_programming_fact_sheet.pdf

(374 posts)Thanks for educating the ignorant - in this case I am talking about myself.
We talked a bit about these policies in my journalism classes way back in the last century. But I have forgotten a lot, and a lot may have changed. It is helpful getting cogent reminders from experts in the field.
As others have pointed out Trump was preaching to the choir with a NASCAR audience, just as Harris was with the SNL audience. They may not have changed any minds, but they may have encouraged some of their supporters to vote.

(11,416 posts)They are owned by Comcast....the worst rated company next to out right fraudsters. Comcast is owned by a bunch of investment management companies. Who needs investment management the most? Yes, the filthy-rich.
All these companies owning companies, owning companies (if corporations were people this would be considered slavery.) is a way of hiding ownership and avoiding responsibility and accountability.
The people who put their money into these irresponsible corporations want to keep their tax give aways, their subsidies and free loans they don't pay back.
So they give Trump free publicity. Harris had to do something for the exposure she got from SNL. She had to do the skit and make jokes. She had to be a genuine nice person. All Trump did was bloviate.
This is an illegal campaign contribution if Trump doesn't report this as a contribution to the FEC.
This is reverse fascism. Corporations controlling the US government by interfering in elections to get more fascism.

(44,651 posts)It isn't an illegal contribution. It is required by 47 USC 315.

I can always count on there being DUers who don't know anything about FCC rules and election laws but think they do.
