Spain hit by deadliest floods in decades. Here's what we know

Spain is reeling from its worst flooding in decades, after a year’s worth of rain fell in just hours this week in the country’s southern and eastern regions.

The storm began on Tuesday and has so far killed at least 95 people while dozens more remain missing. It has also flooded towns and roads, caused rivers to burst their banks and left thousands without power or running water.

Valencia, the worst-struck region, saw its heaviest rainfall in 28 years with people caught off guard and trapped in basements and lower floors of buildings.

Emergency workers are still fighting to rescue those who are trapped, with operations underway to recover bodies and clear debris.

Spain’s eastern and southern regions often see autumn rain, but this year’s downpour was unprecedented. Most of the deaths occurred in Valencia, which is located along the Mediterranean coast and is home to more than 5 million people.........................

We have received an update on the number of people killed by severe flooding in Spain.

Authorities in Valencia now say that at least 155 people in the region have died.

With two more deaths in Castilla-La Mancha and one in Andalusia, that brings the number of deaths so far to 158.

5. We were suppose to be in Spain now!

We made the reservation in February & we would be there from 10/28- 11/8, but in August decided to cancel our trip. We were wary about flying from California to Madrid (such a long way) since we are seniors & don't especially like to fly anyway. We haven't traveled since way before Covid & I tend to get pretty sick when I fly. So we cancelled our plans & bit the bullet on our $600 deposit.
I am very relieved to be home at this time.
