Shapiro on Democrats' chances: 'We've got a better candidate'

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) said in an interview that aired Sunday that Democrats have “a better candidate” when it comes to the presidential race.

“I think both candidates believe that Pennsylvania is critical,” Shapiro told ABC News’s Martha Raddatz on “This Week.” “I just think we’ve got a better candidate. We got a better message. And what we’re experiencing as we’re out, is we’re seeing a whole lot more energy.”

According to an average of Pennsylvania polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, Harris is barely leading former President Trump in the Keystone State, only up by 0.4 points. President Biden captured Pennsylvania in the 2020 election, while Trump won the state in 2016.

“And so I’m feeling really good, not just about the way the votes seem to be lining up, which we get close to the end here, but the enthusiasm we have, and what that means for neighbors convincing other neighbors to step up and do their part to protect our freedom and democracy,” Shapiro said in the interview alongside his fellow “blue wall” Democratic governors, Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer and Wisconsin’s Tony Evers.

From the excerpt -

President Biden captured Pennsylvania in the 2020 election, while Trump won the state in 2016.

And to note what ALL of the media neglect to say is this -

  • 45 won PA in 2016 by ~44,000 votes

  • Biden won PA in 2020 by ~81,000 votes - almost TWICE as many, meaning he actually gained/switched almost 125,000 votes to get that +81,000

  • But note this too for 2024 - McCormick (R) (who is running against Casey, Jr. for Senate here), got MORE votes during the 2024 PA Primary than 45! (872,614 vs 789,350 respectively - a difference of about 83,000 votes). And one can add to this that Biden got 930,255 during that primary vs 45's 789,350 (a difference of 140,905).

We have a closed primary so these are registered-(R) voters.

In its never-ending pursuit of the horse race, the media keeps pulling out this canard as if it were indicative of something, and then use it to promote this year's horse race.

The fact is that trump "won" in 2016 only because he was largely unknown and received massive assistance from russia and Comey's FBI. Never mind the media's non-stop covering the freak show letting trump's antics consume every news cycle.

In 2020, everyone had seen what trump really was and he was roundly defeated. The people had spoken.

It's not going to magically turn into 2016 again. But the media needs clicks and other sponsor money, so they must have a horse race.
