North Carolina Sets New Record For Early Voter Turnout

North Carolinians still recovering from a devastating hurricane set a new record on the first day of early voting in the state.
Amid the ongoing aid effort following Hurricane Helene, 353,166 early voters cast their ballots on Thursday to determine if former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris will take the White House. That tally just barely squeaked ahead of the previous first-day record, when 348,599 people voted on day one in 2020.
On Friday, an additional 152,373 voters cast early ballots, according to The Washington Post.
Fellow battleground state Georgia also broke its record for first-day early voter turnout earlier this week. More than 300,000 people cast votes in Georgia on Tuesday, with nearly 300,000 more votes cast on Wednesday. Its unclear which candidate might benefit most from the early turnout in a race that polls show remains close.

(34,294 posts)and in some states from early voting. Here in TX we don't have to register as one party or the other to vote. But, in general, high turnout usually favors democrats.

(16,303 posts)we usually had a campaign staffer come in and ask us for the count of Dems who had voted. It's public information.

Our early voting starts next week so I'll check the clerk's page and see if they put the numbers up by party. They probably do and I just never looked it up. thanks!

(16,303 posts)early voting dashboard. It's pretty cool. In PA, it looks like Rs are using mail voting more than they did in either 2020 or 2022.

(5,833 posts)Our population is around half of what NC has. The total votes cast in early voting came in at over 1 million out of 3.5 million registered voters. I think people are taking these elections a lot more seriously now given the stakes if the wrong person/party takes power.

(3,312 posts)The 2020 number will stay the same, but the 2024 total for the first day will be updated and refined as all precincts report. A few votes continue to trickle in.

(64,334 posts)I voted mid-afternoon when I hoped the lines might be shorter, and waited longer than typical Election Day lines. I've never waited in an early voting line for more than a few minutes. This was easily 30 minutes.
Deep blue Durham, too. These folks were voting Democratic. Very enthusiastic.
