WASHINGTON, Oct 16 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday about efforts to surge security assistance to Ukraine and announced a new $425 million military aid package, the White House said.
The security package includes air defense capability, air-to-ground munitions, armored vehicles and critical munitions, the White House said in a statement.
Zelenskiy, writing on Telegram, expressed gratitude to Biden, both parties of Congress and the American people for the new package and said he spoke to Biden about Kyiv's five-point "victory plan," which he presented to parliament on Wednesday.
"I proposed considering the possibility of joint weapons production," he said. "We also discussed the importance of additional training for Ukrainian soldiers."

(587 posts)People are struggling in the US right now. I don't think this bodes well for the Harris campaign when it comes to Trump voters. They have tunnel vision.

(587 posts)They don't understand diplomacy nor do they understand why we support Ukraine. All they know is their tax dollars are helping other countries when their country is hurting. Not saying I agree with them. I still have friends on both sides. I know how they react. They think tax dollars belong to them.

I dont think many citizens of the USA will lose their homes and possessions and lives because this country supports others who fight against bullies and tyrants.

All told, Ukraine aid is about $184 per person.
Not every American can become a millionaire with what was spent.

(15,889 posts)And its only endless war because of Putin. Do you want Russia taking over Eastern Europe? If you do, maybe you should vote for Trump.

(17,993 posts)Seems from the glimpses I get a it's a lot of Local, State and Federal Republicans fault cutting various safety nets. "Thank you", Ray-gun, and beyond.
I'm very sorry you felt like, a begger, or a criminal when you shouldn't! It's part of the Cruelty Mentality of most (if not all?) Republicans.
Bootstraps? Well, what if your bootstraps have been cut off by outside circumstances?
In a better USA....
Are there no local Dems at all that might help? Any religious charity groups that help that don't foist their religion on you. Yes, I know that the Catholic Church has allowed hideous predatory behaviors to go on, and shuffled around criminals.
Otoh, I have heard good things about Catholic Charities. Theyre not the only ones doing charity work.
I hope you'll get the help you need and
deserve somehow!

Now, though I must turn to the other issue since there I think very few of us on DU.
I don't know bc my dad's dad (an immigrant) maaaaybe had a half brother (?becomes a half a grand uncle, or something to me) who might have had other relatives [wish I'd asked more back then but I might have still been in my mid teens, idk] where I might have some kind of cousins, semi-distant cousins back in the old country, but one that I have some cultural affinity for (particularly Crafts, and foods) whether I still have any relatives there or not.
I'm talking about myself: being a half 2nd Gen Ukrainian-American living in NYC who has spent time in Little Ukraine (a modestly incomed community, certainly w poorer sections); the largest Ukrainian-American group in The USA in the East Village - off, and on for decades.
Who couldn't go down there when Putin's war mongering began bc of Covid still majorly around. Who saw posters for fundraisers up bc a youngish Urban Story Teller/guide went down w his video cam, his set up on-line to show us Little Ukraine at that point in time.
Things got a bit draggy this past summer but it was probably the first year I'd would have finally felt much safer going down there, but I didn't make it.
I know I'll probably shed some tears when I finally get there - whether Putin's bullying, murderous war is over or not.
I'm sorry with your very scary, painful predictcument that you don't get, or don't care that Putin's aggressions won't stop at part of Ukraine, or even beyond Ukraine.
It remains a dangerous situation over there - a potential expansion of war in Eastern Europe. No democratic loving person, and country wants a threatening dictator on their doorstep.

(17,993 posts)You:
Can't even take care of our own.
I had to attempt to apply for Medi-Cal the other day. One of the most humiliating experiences of my life as I need HELP living alone at my age with a serious disability.
I left feeling like a beggar and a criminal. No help for me, that was pretty clear. My refrigerator is about empty.
So is the above re the almost empty fridge, and applying for Cali-Med about you, or the other person you're talking anout? Terrible, either way.
You:
You don't like him, but you're [as stated above] against another $425,000,000 for Ukraine.
And Ukrainians refer to their country as Ukkraine not "The Ukraine".
I didn't know myself before Putin's latest aggression (vs Crimea).

(21,067 posts)Both situations suck. I went to check-it out for myself as I mentioned. My friend cannot do this so it was a two for one.
Its a shame I couldn't find anything much for either of us.
All I know about the Russia/Ukkraine situations is that neither of them are doing one another or the USA any good all all.
Fraud galore on either side of the coin IMO.

(11 posts)and teetering on that edge myself. (Spine disabled since age 4) You are an ALICE classified case. That means Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (or retired, or disabled of working age) Democrats have been trying to remedy the situation for a decade, but Republican and DINO budget BS has made it a non starter and will remain so until we accomplish a trifecta. Activism is your friend!
Also, the money is spent right here in this country, keeping the weapons factories humming and people employed. Most weapons facilities are located in red states, so the Republican Party and magats are whining and crying all the way to the bank!
